Carlisle

A LARGE entry of 1295 cattle sold dearer on the week at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale at Carlisle, which included 677 store cattle and 388 calves.

The 438 store steers and heifers attracted a large ringside of buyers and topped at £1235 for a Charolais cross bullock from Messrs Udale, Sideway Bank, Penrith, while heifers sold to £1205 for a pen of three Limousin crosses from Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm, Wigton.

Among the 240 weaned cattle, good quality stirks sold dearer on the week and reached £1200 for two pure-bred Limousin bulls from Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside, while a plainer show of beef calves peaked at £470 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Fox, Windy Hill, Hethersgill, Carlisle.

Dingwall

DINGWALL and Highland Marts' sold 181 store cattle at its Dingwall centre last week, as well as 31 breeding cattle and 74 OTM cattle.

The 102 store bullocks averaged 196.0p and peaked at 254.1p for a 185kg Limousin cross from Brae Eynort, Carbost, and £1035 for a 550kg Aberdeen-Angus from Cragganvallie, Abriachan.

Heifers (77) topped the gross trade at £1035 for a 555kg Simmental cross from Upper Thrumster, Wick, and also reached 213.5p for a 260kg Limousin cross from Sangomore, Durness, having averaged 182p.

Of the 31 breeding cattle, a Salers cross cow with bull calf at foot from Coilach, Muir of Ord, topped at £1000, while the 69 OTM prime and feeding cows hit a top of 158.2p for a 550kg Limousin cross from Croft No 101, Drumbuie, and £1130 for an 845kg Limousin cross from Clury Farm, Dulnain Bridge.

OTM bulls (five) sold to £1270 gross for a Salers weighing 1190kg from Kinnahaird Farm, Contin.

Store bullocks averaged 206.30p per kg, with dairy types at 133p and heifers at 199.42p at United Auctions' sale of 405 store cattle.

The 224 bullocks topped the trade at 258.80p for a 340kg Charolais cross from Ashmark and £1315 for the same from Shortrigg, while 149 heifers hit 223.90p for another weighing 355kg from Ashmark and £1230 for a 572kg Limousin cross from Elmscleugh.

Black and white bullocks (31) sold to 148.70p for a 501kg Holstein Friesian cross from Low Ardwell and £790 for the same weighing 546kg from Wester Whitefield.

Averaging 104.20p, the 209 cast cows sold to 219.80p and £1420 for the pre-sale champion, a three-year-old Limousin heifer from Muirhouses which sold to the judge, Andy Ingram, Huntly. The 22 dairy types levelled at 76.70p having sold to 98.90p for a Holstein Friesian cross from Lynn and £775 for a Holstein cross from Drumalea.

Among the 1457 store and feeding sheep, trade peaked at £73 for Suffolk lambs from Dalmahoy.

Huntly

Topping the gross trade at £1140 at United Auctions' sale of store cattle, weaned calves and OTMs at Huntly, last week, was a 355kg Limousin cross heifer from Loanhead, Logie Coldstone, which also realised 321p per kg.

The bullocks sold to a top of 217p for a 415kg Simmental cross from Wester Elchies, Aberlour and £1030 for a Limousin cross from Parrock Farm, Rothiemay.

OTM cattle reached 126p for a 710kg British Blue cross from Loanhead and £1070 for a Simmental cross from Wester Elchies.

Hopes

STORE cattle met a similar trade on the fortnight, with a firmer enquiry for younger types at Hopes Auction Company's sale of 101 head.

Topping the trade at £1165 was a Limousin heifer from JA and AVN Birkett, Grange Farm, while bullocks sold to £1145 for a Charolais from S and D Peile, Parkgate Hall.

A small show of bulls attracted a ringside of local buyers and reached £875 for a Limousin from Messrs Todd, Craggs Farm.

An improved show of 69 OTM cows met a similar trade to the previous sale having sold to a top of £1493.30 and 177.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Watson, Cunningarth.

The Christmas show and sale of cast cows judged by Anthony Skelton, saw the championship awarded to a British Blue cross from Messrs Airey, The Close, which Mr Skelton later purchased for 179.5p. Reserve went to a three quarter Limousin cross weighing 819kg from Cunningarth, which made 171.5p.

Thainstone

WITH cattle forward for sale which had been outside, trade was back on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 647 store cattle and seven young bulls at Thainstone, last week.

The 268 bullocks averaged 201p per kg and sold to 256.4p for a pen of three 388kg Charolais crosses from Leys Estate, Inverness, and £1365 for a 686kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from West Rora, Longside.

Averaging 199.6p, the 361 heifers peaked at 253.2p for a 316kg Limousin cross from North Lurg, Midmar and £1320 for a 614kg Charolais cross from Spring Valley, Stronsay.

Of the 11 bulls forward, trade peaked at 216.3p for a pen of three 416kg Simmentals from Lower Wanford, Banff and £1110 for a 666kg Simmental from Lower Wanford.

Young calves (seven) sold to £220.

On the same day, 101 head of breeding cattle sold to a top of £2100 for a Simmental cross heifer with bull calf from Lost Farm, Strathdon.

The firm also sold 4498 store lambs, island sheep, breeding and feeding sheep, where a good show of 2250 lambs met an excellent demand and sold to £89 for Texels from Waulkmill, Corse, while 1071 island lambs peaked at £79 for Texels from Trondheim, Rendall.

Texel ewes from Greenlands, Nigg Station, topped the 197 breeding sheep, while 978 feeding ewes and rams hit £103.50 for continental ewes from 11 Raemoir Road, Banchory.

A SEASONAL entry of store cattle sold to similar rates at Mitchell Auction Company's sale of store cattle, where a top price of £1095 was paid for a Limousin bullock from AR Mason, Annaside Farm, Bootle.

Heifers hit a top of £1035 twice for Limousins from W Sharpe, Woodend Lodge, Lamplugh.

The Christmas show and sale of calves judged by Miss Chloe Shepherd, Drigg, was won by R and M Allison, Barnyard, Greysouthen, with a British Blue calf which sold for £350, while the same home took the reserve honours with a British Blue heifer which made £330.

In the dairy show, judge Andrew Hunter, Mealsgate, awarded the championship to a heifer from JW Graves and Son, Home Farm, Tallentire.

Store lambs met a tremendous trade having topped at £77 for Texels from T and A Teasdale, Sale Fell House, Cockermouth.
