Store bullocks averaged 201.94p per kg, with dairy types at 148.39p and heifers at 189.15p at United Auctions sale of 545 store cattle.

The 287 bullocks topped the trade at 248.20p for a 272kg Charolais cross from West Gormack, and to £1290 for a 727kg Charolais cross from Deerpark.

The 208 heifers hit 189.15p for a 283kg Simmental cross from Woodburn and£1210 for a 607kg Shorthorn cross from Deerpark.

Dairy bullocks (31) sold to 167.20p per kg for a 341kg Holstein Friesian cross from Berryhill and £740 for the same weighing 584kg from Wester Whitefield.

Averaging 102.13p, the 233 beef cast cows sold to 169.80p per kg for a Simmental cross from Riccarton and to £1350 for a Charolais cross from Caskerdo. The nine dairy types averaged 75.66p, selling to 93.60p per kg for one from Howfold and to £675 from the same home.

Also forward were 8843 store lambs and feeding sheep at the annual martinmas sale for Blackface lambs, where the average was £50.96, up £4.12p on the year.

Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington had forward 818 head of cattle at their weekly Wednesday sale in Carlisle, comprising of 503 catalogued store cattle and un-entered store bulls and stirks and 315 calves.

Yet another good entry of 357 strong store cattle forward sold to a very good trade for all classes sold. Top overall were two Charolais cross steers achieving £1370 from the late David Grindal, Greenhills, Penrith. Messrs Wales Thackwood, Carlisle sold another to £1310 the same vendor also sold top Limousin cross to £1275. British Blues to £1240 from Greenhills and Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1210 from Messrs Lloyd, Fishergill, Wigton

Heifers saw a day’s top of £1150 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Haresceugh Castle, Penrith and £1140 for another from Messrs Harrison, Beck Farm, Wigton.

British Blues to £1145 from Messrs Fishwick, Thornship, Penrith and £1125 for two Beef Shorthorns from Messrs Goddard, Frankstown, Longtown.

A smaller show of 146 weanlings were forward with a larger ring side of buyers ensuring a sharper trade. Messrs Noble, Walmgate, topped the sale at £900 for a nine-month-old Limousin cross bullock.

On Monday, the company had forward a smaller show of store lambs as expected with the festive season and top price of the day was £87 for a single Texel cross lamb from Messrs Edgar, Fell Side Farm, Ousby. All sheep proved dearer on the week seeing the sale average over £60 throughout.

Craig Wilson sold 299 store cattle at their sale in Ayr, where 158 beef bullocks averaged 198.9p per kg or £837.78, 122 heifers averaged 186.31p per kg or £740.86, and 19 dairy-bred bullocks averaged 146.54p per kg or £704.21.

Top price of the day was £1200 for a Limousin bullock off Gass, Straiton, and for a Simmental bullock from Auchleach or 275.6p.kg for a pen of Charolais bullocks off Dalhanna. Heifers peaked at £1110 for a Limousin off Auchentibbert or 214.6p/kg for a Limousin off Mid Craigton. Dairy bullocks topped at £730 for a pen of Friesians from Stevenston or 173.5p/kg for Norwegian Reds from Inchparks.

There were100 cattle sold through the rough ring, with two bulls sold averaging 127.2p and peaking at £1210 (171.6p) for a Saler from C McClymont, Cuil. 48 beef cows averaged 92.4p, peaking at £940 (120.5p) for a Aberdeen Angus cow from Messrs Tulloch , Riggfoot. 49 dairy-bred cows averaged 78.1p, peaking at £780 for a black and white from Messrs Baird, Dalhowan, and to 101p from Messrs Veitch, Strandhead. Also sold this week were 12 dairy cattle, which peaked at £2050 for a Holstein Friesian heifer from T Smith, South Kilbride, with the sale averaging £1408.

A smaller show of 659 store lambs sold very dear to a large ringside of buyers, peaking at £73 for a pen of 11 Suffolk lambs off Markhill Farms, Glenduisk, followed by a pen of Texels at £72.50 off the same home.

The 126 heifers averaged 189.7p, and sold to 223.9p per kg for a Charolais cross from Whiteside, and £1380 gross for a pair of 750kg Simmental crosses from Netherton. The 30 bulls sold to 218.8p per kg and £1050 gross, while the 146 bullocks averaged 205.6p to 271.7p per kg for a 254kg Charolais cross from Whiteside, Lonmay, and £1360 gross for a 742kg Simmental cross Netherton, Glenlivet.

The 30 bulls sold to 218.8p per kg for a 288kg Shorthorn cross from Salties, Sanday and £1050 gross for a 618kg Charolais from Mormond Prop.

The firm sold 3841 store lambs, island sheep, breeding and feeding sheep, with the 2335 store lambs selling to £85 for Texels from Garvelside. The 389 island lambs reached £78.50 for Continentals from Lower Ellibister. Caledonian Marts Ltd held their last store sale of the year comprising of 47 store cattle and suckled calves, where heifers sold to 244p for a British Blue from TE and I J Davies, Low Penniver, Campbeltown, and to £1100 from the same home.

Bullocks sold to 211p for a pen of Limousins from D McKenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn, and to £850 from Barr Farms, Meldrum, Blairdrummond.

Also forward were 1132 store and feeding sheep, with the top price being £75 for a pen of Texels from JW Harrison, Auchtygemmell.

Hexham

At their penultimate sale of the year Hexham and Northern Marts offered for sale 154 catalogued head of store cattle with all classes dearer on the week.

The sale peaked at £1370 for a Charolais cross steer from Ken Sisterson, Newlands, Haugh. Mr Sisterson also sold another at £1360. The leading priced heifer also came from the same home and sold for £1310 whilst a trio of successes on the day also saw the top priced native breed animal, an Aberdeen-Angus cross steer by a pedigree sire out of a pure Charolais cow reach £1305, contributing to a great average of £1289 for the five steers and four heifers sold by Mr Sisterson.

An entry of 854 cast sheep this week saw larger continental and Suffolk cross ewes still a good trade. Leaner mule ewes and horned

ewes were slightly easier on the week but better than predicted.

The sale of 3650 store lambs saw a pen of 10 Beltex cross lambs sell for £87.50 from M and L Churchyard, Hownsgill, Consett, and a total sale average of £67.65.

Darlington

Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday when 204 cattle and 551 sheep were forward.

The 43 store heifers sold to £1135, while the 44 store steers sold to £1220. Seven stirks forward sold to £635.

A lift in trade saw the 88 cast cows average 106p per kg, selling to 170p per kg or £1283 for a four-year-old Limousin cow from DK Barker, Little Ketton Farm, Coatham, Munderville.

The final sale of store cattle for the year saw a lighter show sell well, with the top price on the day being £1220 achieved by a Charolais steer from JH Johnson of White Lea, Roddymoor. A tremendous run from this home topped the £1200 barrier on five occasions.

Top priced heifer at £1135 was a Limousin from F Ward, Rogerley Hall, Frosterley.

Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington's monthly sale of beef breeding cattle saw a top call of £2000 for a Limousin heifer and calf from Messrs Stevenson and Sons, Lower Langshaw, who also had a Limousin cross cow and calf at £1980. Messrs Carr and Son, Highwood, had a run of cows and heifers with calves at foot which topped at £1880 for a British Blue cross cow and calf. In-calf heifers sold to £1220 for a Britsih Blue cross heifer in calf to a Limousin.
