Forfar

At Forfar, Lawrie and Symington had forward 32 prime cattle and 15 OTM’s, as well as 849 prime sheep and cast ewes.

The four bullocks sold to a top of 256p per kg and £1635.84 for a 639kg Limousin from Nethermyres, to average 246p per kg.

The 28 heifers sold to a top of 262p per kg for a 556kg Limousin from Nethermyres and to £1515.26 for a 634kg Charolais from Woodhead of Mailer, to average .36p per kg.

Prime hoggs (665) sold to 239.5p per kg for Beltex from Scobshaugh and to £106 per head for Texels from Mains of Dalrulzion. SQQ Hoggs averaged 203.1p per kg, up 8.3p. Overall, the average was 198p per kg, up 6.7p.

Kirkby Stephen

An entry of 4231 sheep were forward at Harrison and Hetherington’s Kirkby Stephen mart, consisting of 3066 prime hoggs and 1165 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hoggs at £128.80 was a pen of three Blue Texel hoggs from Messrs Jarvis,

Cragg House, Preston, while selling at 272.7p per kg or £90, were a pen of 33kg Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Williamson, Littleburn.

The best quality strong ewes were topped at £158.50 for a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Dedman, Darlington.

Another pen of six Texel ewes sold for £148.50 from Mr R Wilson, Appleby, while a pen of 25 Blackface ewes sold to £59.50 from Newton Farm, Aberdeenshire.

Swaledale ewes sold to £58.50 for a pen from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington, and Mule ewes sold to £78.50 for a pen of four from Messrs Longrigg, Breaks Hall.

Penrith

On Wednesday, Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 3270 prime sheep, comprising of 1391 cast ewes and rams and 1880 prime hoggs and another sharp trade was witnessed on the week, with an SQQ average of 200.0p per kg achieved.

Topping the sale at 275.0p per kg was a pen of 40kg Beltex cross hoggs from MTP and SD Wills, Fawcett Park, these totalled £110 per head. A single Beltex hogg from the same home, weighing 53kg realised £112 and this run of 47kg hoggs averaged £97.30.

Mules once again met a marvellous trade with Messrs Lowis, Waterside House, selling 54kg hoggs to £94 per head.

Lightweight Mules from Town Head, Ravenstonedale, sold to 189.0p per kg for 36kgs, or £68.

Cast ewes and rams met a much sharper trade with 160 ewes achieving over the £100 mark. Topping this section at £148 was a Texel ewe from CW Stoddart, Home Farm.

A strong entry of Texel cross ewes from Messrs AW Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, averaged £108. In total, the 249 Texel cast ewes averaged £93.53.

Cockermouth

There was a top price of 199.5p per kg for a Limousin bull when Mitchells Auction Co held their weekly sale of primestock, where there were 37 cattle forward, comprising 27 cull cattle and 10 prime bulls and clean cattle, as well as 1744 prime sheep including 1404 hoggs and 340 cast ewes and rams.

The sale topper at 199.5p per kg came from D and MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall. Top price per head was £1370.40, achieved for a British Blue bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank.

Cast cows sold to 104.50p per kg for a limousine from East House, and to £768.08 for a Holstein Friesian from Woodend.

With a good show of hoggs forward, the SQQ average was 194.6p per kg and leading the trade was pen of hoggs from A and J Clark, Cherrytree House, selling for 266.20p. Top price per head was £121 for a Beltex hogg from M Stockdale, Crosshow Farm.

Cast ewes sold to £124 for a Texel from Wardhall Guards, while rams sold to £86 for a texel from Srudda Bank.

Dumfries

Prime cattle sold at improved rates when C and D Auction Marts held their weekly sale in Dumfries. There were 78 cattle forward, with Limousin cross heifers selling to 234p per kg and 232p per kg from R Neill, Upper Tinwald.

OTM cattle were sharper with more buyers present actively seeking greater numbers. Top price per head was £1076.40 for a Holstein from Drum. The same home had the top price per kg of 138p.

Also forward were 1717 sheep, where trade slipped back for the 1347 prime hoggs, with the best sorts meeting the most demand. Trade topped at £96 for a Texel from Skipmyre, and to 217p per kg from Whinneyknowe.

The sale of 366 cast sheep saw good type ewes in demand, selling to £167.50 for a Texel from New Mains.

Stirling (UA)

United Auctions, Stirling, sold 5668 prime sheep, including 4011 prime lambs which sold to an average of 187.1p per kg and saw a top of £108 for Texels from Overton of Knaven, and 236p per kg for Beltex from West Lethans.

The 1657 ewes and rams sold to £148 for Texel ewes from Newton of Collessie.

Longtown

At Longtown, C and D Auction Marts had forward 10 cast cows, 4485 prime hoggs and 5003 cast ewes and rams, where cast cows sold to a sharper trade and the sale was topped at 125p and 120for Limousin cows from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston.

The 4485 prime hoggs were a smaller but quality show, producing an overall average of 196.0p, and an SQQ average of 202.5p. All hoggs met an extremely good trade which would be very similar on the previous week’s high rates, with the exception of heavy hoggs which were 5p less on the week. Quality Beltex and Texel

Heavy hoggs sold to a top of £120 for Texel hoggs from S Stoddart, Hillside, Wigton and from J Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick. Suffolks sold to £108 from Fearn Farm, Inverness, and Greyface hoggs to £95 from Banniskirk Mains, Caithness.

Light hoggs reached £78 for 32kg Texel hoggs from R Bell and Partners, Craigow, Kinross and to 252p for 30kg Mule hoggs from J Armour, High Tirfergus, Campbeltown.

The 5006 cast ewes and rams were a much larger entry on the week, and a satisfying trade was realised with prices either similar or slightly dearer, selling to a top of £170 for Texel ewes from J Pate and Partners, Craigsford Mains, Galashiels.

Stirling (Cal)

Caledonian Marts this week sold 115 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, 92 OTM cattle and 55 calves, with prime bullocks topping at 245p for a Limousin from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, and to £1560 for a Limousin from S Graham, Parkhouse, Crieff. Prime heifers sold to 255p for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, and to £1565 from Learielaw.

Young bulls sold to 205p for a Limousin from D McBeath and SJ Jessop, Lower Greenyards, Bannockburn, and to £1537 for the same beast.

Also forward were 92 OTM cattle, and beef cows averaged 108p selling to 150p for a Limousin from IW, Brisbane and Son, South Woodlane, Blair Drummond, and to £1180 for a Charolais from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blair Drummond.

Dairy cows averaged 87p selling to 103p from J Craig, Carneil, Carnock and to £800 for the

same. Cast Bulls sold to 116p and £1080 from T and E Tod, Nether Longford, West Calder.

Thainstone

At Thainstone, Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale saw old season lamb (1548) average 186.4p, up 11.7p and sell to 210p for 40kg Beltex from Goval.

Top price per head was £94.50 for 53kg Continentals from Bogmill, Pitcaple, 56kg Texels from Mains of Leask, Slains, and 49kg Texels from Mid Haddo, Fyvie.

Old Season SQQ lambs (944) averaged 191.8p per kg, up 9.9p.

The 614 feeding ewes and rams sold to £139.50 for Texel’s from Home Farm of Auchry, Cuminestown.

The firm also had forward 228 cows and bulls, with beef cows (216) averaging 114.1p and selling to 172.1p per kg for a 520kg Limouisn from Mucklehouse, Swannay and £1290 gross for a 1035kg Limousin from Middleton of Potterton, Aberdeen.

The ten bulls averaged 103.8p and sold to 121.5p per kg for a 1045kg Limousin from Knockans, Boharm, and £1350 gross for a 1210kg Simmental from Newton of Mountblairy, Banff.

St Boswells

At St Boswells on Monday, Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly primestock sale, with 48 clean cattle, 35 cast cows, 1214 hoggs and 472 ewes forward.

The 21 bullocks averaged 211.4p per kg and sold to 233p, up 5p on the week. 27 heifers averaged 222.5p per kg and sold to 245p, up 11p on the week.

There were 35 cast cows forward, averaging 124p per kg and selling to 209p, up 15p on the week.

An average of 191p per kg was achieved for the 1214 hoggs, up 1p on the week, with a top of £103 and 242p per kg for Beltex hoggs.

The 472 Ewes averaged £60 and sold to £119 for Suffolk ewes. Heavy ewes averaged £79, while light ewes averaged £49.

Ayr

Craig Wilson sold 1830 sheep comprising 1239 prime hoggs and 591 cast ewes and tups.

Lambs averaged 185.1p and export types were easiest sold with heavy over fat lambs being hardest cashed with an SQQ average of 191.4p.

Top price was £100 for Beltex from W and A Watson, Muir, or 208.1p from J Etchells, Collvinston for a pen off Texels.

The 591 cast ewes and rams sold sold to less on the week, with 306 light ewes averaging £34.83, 12 tups averaging £67.13, while the 273 heavy ewes averaged £72.81.

Leading the ewe trade at £133 was a Texel from A Currie, Fisherton. Mules sold to £65 for a pair from J Cousar, Howcommon, while Blackfaces topped at £47 from North Deanhead. Tups sold to £97.50 for a pair of Texels from J Kennedy and Son, Perryston.

Lanark

On Monday, Lawrie and Symington sold 177 cattle, with heifers selling to £1520 from Collielaw and to 250p per kg from the same home, while bullocks sold to £1230, 230p from The Hill.

Young bulls sold to 211p per kg from West Glespin, while cast bulls reached £1465 from Coddlehaugh.

Beef cows sold to £1145 per head from Glenrath and to 154p per kg from Carlophill.

The sale of 2309 hoggs and 969 cast ewes saw trade top at £109 per head for Texels from Ferguson Bros, Gillandersland Farm, and to 231p per kg for Beltex from Messrs Struthers, Boylston. The overall average was 193p per g and SQQ lambs averaged 197p per kg.

Another large show of ewes saw trade remain good, although the dizzy heights of last week were not repeated. Good ewes were still in demand with export type Blackface and Cheviot sharper. Fat ewes were still hard to sell. The sale topped at £154 for Texels from Cauldcoats.

Carlisle

Harrison Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock where they had a larger show of 520 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with a smaller show of 1561 prime and cast sheep forward.

The 351 cast cows and stock bulls saw Messrs Bell, Far Broom, top the sale with a 825kg British Blue cross selling at 206.5p per kg or £1703 for a British Blue cross and for a 880kg Limousin cross selling at 149.5p per kg or £1315.

A show of 14 stock bulls were on offer with trade being 20p up on the week. Messrs Ivinson and Sons, Skelling, sold the top priced bull, a 979kg Limousin at 175.5p per kg or £1718.

A large show of dairy cross cows saw well fleshed cows being 10p up on the week, however plainer cows were a similar trade.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped the sale, with a 758kg cow, selling at 138.5p per kg. Messrs Skelton, Gill, sold a 877kg Holstein cross cow at 114.5p per kg or £1004.

There were 118 prime bulls forward, with black and whites and light to middle weight continental types selling similar on the week, however heavy types sold much dearer on the week. Topping the day’s trade at £2057.83 was a Charolais from Messrs Wight, Townfoot, Biggar.

A smaller show of prime lambs were forward this week, with export lambs remaining very good to sell, and an SQQ of 202p per kg being achieved, however heavy type lambs were in less demand and failed to reach recent rates. The sale average was £85.01.

An increased number of ewes sold to a top of £131.50 for Texels from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg. Hill ewes sold to £72.50 for Cheviots from Roachburn.

Castle Douglas

Wallets Marts had forward 2073 prime and cast sheep on Tuesday when 1687 prime hoggs sold to average 180.34p, with SQQ lambs averaging 188.12p.

Top price per head was £93.50 for Cheviots from Halket Leaths.

The 386 cast sheep were a plainer show for quality and like Mondays trade would look cheaper on the week. Trade peaked at £73 for Texels from Slatehouse.

Ayr

At Ayr, Craig Wilson sold 203 prime and cast cattle at their sale in Ayr where the 13 heifers averaged 211.6p or £1142.66, while the six bulls averaged 163.4p or £874.08.

Top Price of the day was 240p for a Limousin heifer from High Gameshill or £1452 for the same. Bulls topped at 175p for an Aberdeen Angus from Knockeffrick or £1111.25.

In the rough ring, the nine bulls sold to £1260 for a Limousin from Kirminnoch or 143.2p for the same, to average 110.6p per kg.

Beef cows were led at £1190 by a Limousin from Fisherton and 158p for a Limousin from High Bent. The 78 forward averaged 112.3p per kg.

The 82 dairy cattle sold to £900 for a Friesian from Carskerdo and 116.9p for a Friesian from Dormieston.

Selling to a top of £990 were the 15 clean cattle. This was achieved for an Aberdeen Angus Heifer from Meikle Laught and a Simmental Heifer from Botherickfield.

Stirling (Cal)

There were 1606 prime hoggs forward at Caledonian Marts Tuesday sale in Stirling, where they followed the national trend and were easier on the week with heavy hoggs being the hardest to cash. Over 50% of the sale were 45kg+ resulting in an overall sale average of 180.35p, down 17.5p on the week.

A small show of 309 export hoggs, 37-42kg, were forward to average 201p per kg with 636 SQQ hoggs averaging 189p per kg. Top price of the day went to WM Bell and Son, Craigend, for a 45kg Beltex at £100, while the top price per kg went to Straid Farms for the last sheep sold in the ring, a 40kg Beltex at 225p per kg.

Also forward were 455 cast ewes and tups, which were also slightly easier on the week, although Blackface ewes were sharper.

Heavy ewes averaged £71.37 selling to £111 for a pair of Texels from JAC Stewart, Kinninmonth, Ceres, while light ewes averaged £42.47, selling to £55 for a pen of Cheviots from J Gilvear, Graystale, Stirling.

Dingwall

Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 13 prime cattle, with five prime bullocks averaging 206.4p, down 5.2p and selling to 210p per kg and £1396.50 gross for a 665kg Limousin cross from Bridgend, Dingwall.

The eight prime heifers forward averaged 206.4p, down 1.3p, and selling to 213p per kg for a 620kg Limousin cross from Easter Strath of Auchterflow, Killen, and £1350 gross for a 675kg Limousin cross from Mountgerald, Dingwall.

The firm also sold 951 prime sheep, with 816 old season lambs averaging 192.7p per kg, up 1.6p, and sold to 227.9p per kg and £98 gross for 43kg Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. 539 SQQ lambs averaged 198.2p, up 2.2p per kg.

The 135 feeding sheep forward sold to £97 for Texel ewes from Ballicherry Farm, Balblair.

Newton Stewart

Wednesday saw 1005 prime and cast sheep sold at Newton Stewart, with 759 prime hoggs averaging 182.4p per kg. Nice handy weight export hoggs were dearer, while fatter heavier types were definitely cheaper. Heavy weights sold to £90 for Texels from Messrs McKie, High Threave. Top price per kg of 216.7p was paid for 39kg Beltex crosses from G Milroy, Mains of Machermore.

The 246 cast sheep forward were cheaper, peaking at £97 for Texel cross ewes from D Manson, Auchleach. Tups sold to £90 for Texels from R Paterson, Kiltersan.
