Dumfries

Prime cattle met a steady trade at C and D Auction Marts' sale of 70 head selling to 222p per kg for Limousin cross heifers from Nether Ernambrie and Balgray Hill.

The 60 OTM cattle reached £147.60 for a Charolais from Dalmakethar, and 157p per kg for an Angus from Conheath.

Trade was better than expected for the 744 prime hoggs, where trade peaked at £97 from Belridding and 221p per kg from Bush of Craigs

The 316 cast sheep peaked at £135.50 for a Texel from Riggheads.

Cockermouth

Last week Mitchells Auction Co, sold 46 cattle comprising 28 cull cattle and 18 prime bulls and clean cattle, 1554 prime sheep including 1136 hoggs and 418 cast ewes and rams.

Top price per kg was 225.5p paid for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Bowe, Hunday Farm, while a Holstein Friesian bull from the same home made £1368.51.

Leading the sheep trade at 271.70p was a Texel hogg from Holliday and Graham, Bolton Wood Lane Farm, with a Beltex from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, making £130. The SQQ average was 194.6p

Forfar

SOME 30 cattle and five OTMs, as well as 813 sheep and cast ewes were forward for Lawrie and Symington's prime sale in Forfar.

Overall, five bullocks sold to 244p per kg for a 603kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and £1483.90 for a 710kg British Blue from Chapel of Barras, to average 228p, while the 25 heifers peaked at 256p for a 558kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and to £1466.40 for a 624kg Limousin from the same home. They averaged 232p.

SQQ lambs averaged 198.6p per kg, with an overall average of 190.9p per kg. Top price was 208.8p paid for Beltex from Scobshaugh and £96 for more of the same from Balbrydie.

Penrith

Penrith and District Farmers’ sale of 3062 prime sheep, comprised 1391 cast ewes and rams and 1671 prime hoggs, which saw an SQQ average of 199p per kg.

Beltex hoggs scaling 39kg from MTP and SD Wills, Fawcett Park, led the trade at 269p, while a pen of four of the same weighing 45kg realised £110 for N Gill, Stonethwaite, Borrowdale.

Cast sheep peaked at £138 for pure Texel ewes from JA Brownrigg, The Croft.

Longtown

At Longtown, C and D Auction Marts' sold 23 cast cows, 4242 prime hoggs and 4388 cast ewes and rams, at their prime sale which saw a Limousin cow from JDM Thomson, Pilmuir, lead the trade at £1118.

Top price per kg was 145p came from Girnwood.

Prime hoggs averaged 193.7p with an SQQ of 201.4p and a top price of 282p paid for Texel hoggs from G Brough, Old Rectory, Kirkbampton.

Heavy hoggs slipped 10p on the week having sold to £113 for Texel hoggs from A R Bell and Son, Kirkton, Hawick, and again from Old Rectory.

Trade was also easier amongst the cast sheep by £5-8 per head having sold to £146 for Texel ewes from G Wilkinson, Arkleby House, with hill ewes to £60 for Blackfaces from Hendries Bros, Millands, Ayr. Texels topped the rams at £128 for Newbigging.

Thainstone

PRIME cattle improved on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' weekly sale of 32 head where five bullocks average 201.9p (+3.7p) and 17 heifers levelled at 209p (+8p). The six young bulls levelled at 186.5p.

Bullocks sold to 222p per kg for a 565kg Limousin cross from Whiteside, Tullynessle and £1387.50 for a 750kg Simmental cross from Little Whitefield, Forglen.

Heifers peaked at 220p for a 595kg Limsousin cross from Johns Forest, Inverurie and £1376.00 for a 640kg Simmental cross from Newton of Drum, Drumoak.

A 615kg Limousin from Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt, led the bulls at 199p with a 950kg entry of the same breed making £1814.50 for West Knock, Mintlaw.

Young bulls (Six) averaged 186.5p (No Comp) and sold to 199p per kg for a 615kg Limousin from Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt and £1,814.50 gross for a 950kg Limousin from West Knock, Mintlaw.

The 200 cows and bulls, saw 185 beef cows average 116.2p, (+2.1p) from a top price of 161.9p per kg paid for a Salers from Skaill, Sandwick, and £1155 for a 805kg Charolais from Nether Balfour, Drumoak, and a 1005kg Shorthorn from Nether Lenshie, Rothienorman.

Dairy cows (five) averaged 90.5p, (+5p), and sold to 98.5pfor a 685kg Swedish Red and £755 for a 780kg Friesian both from Berriedale, South Ronaldsay.

Old season lambs (1004) sold to 245.7p per kg for 35kg Beltex from Strathore, Shapinsay and £100 for 45kg Beltex from Hallhill, Kinneff. The SQQ (347) averaged 195p (+3.2p).

Pure Texels from Mid Haddo, Fyvie topped the entry of 653 ewes and rams at £135.

Stirling (Cal)

Caledonian Marts sold 165 head comprising of 96 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls and 69 OTM cattle, at their weekly prime cattle sale.

Prime heifers were topped at 248p for a Limousin from J and J Wylie, Knockhouse, Crossford, and £1536 for a Limousin from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie.

Bullocks peaked at 242p and £1544, for a Limousin from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Muthill, with young bulls selling to 200p and £1508 for a Limousin from W Dick and Sons, Mains of Throsk.

Well fleshed OTM cows averaged 126p with the overall average including feeding cows levelling at 116p. Top price was 178p for a Limousin from D and J McKerrow, Nochnary, Freuchie, and £1200 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Keithhill Cattle Company, Humbie Mill, Humbie.

Dairy cows averaged 87p selling to 104p from J Johnston and Sons, North Medrox, Cumbernauld and to £880 from the same home.

On Tuesday, some 1550 prime hoggs, ewes and tups were cashed where the overall average for 1306 hoggs cashing in at 192p (+11.7p) with an SQQ of 202.6p for 706.

Top price was £101 paid for 56kg Beltex from WM Bell and Son, Craigend, Perth and from JB Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Muthill. The former also produced the lead price per kg at 230p for 39.6kg Beltex.

The 244 ewes and rams saw a top price of £100 paid fora a Texel from G McGregor and Sons, Binn. Light ewes averaged £43.36 with heavies £70.51.

A Texel from I and G Farmer, Balbedie, Kinglassie, led the rams at £86.

Stirling (UA)

At Stirling, United Auctions sold 4029 prime sheep comprising 3040 old season lambs which averaged 186.1p per kg having sold to £105 for a Texel from Longfauld, and to 223p per kg for a Texel from Loanhead of Duchally.

The 989 ewes and rams sold to £139 for a Texel ewe from Elmscleugh and to £55 for a Blackface ram from the same home.

Lanark

Limousins led the way at Lawrie and Symington's prime cattle sale at Lanark selling to 251p per kg for a heifer from from David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie, and 236p from R Struthers, Collielaw, Carluke.

The 2736 hoggs sold to £99 per head for Texels from R and M Struthers, Collielaw, and to 234p per kg for Beltex from T Linton, The Firs. The overall average was 192p per kg, and SQQ 196p per kg.

Another large show of 1301 cast sheep peaked at £142 for Texels from Fleming, Nisbet.

Orkney

On Orkney, the entry of 734 prime hoggs and 98 cast sheep saw hoggs sell to 194.2p per kg for eight Beltex weighing 43kg, which grossed £83.50, from T and J Leslie, Quoumorhouse, Shapinsay.

The same home also produced the lead price of £88.50 paid for seven 46kg Beltex.

Cast ewes peaked at £116 for a pair of Texels from RS Thomson, Hallbreck, South Ronaldsay.

Ayr

At Ayr on Monday, Craig Wilson sold 1275 prime and cast sheep, where a smaller show of 990 prime hoggs sold to average 190.8p with an SQQ level of 198.4p.

Hoggs peaked at £95 for a pair of Beltex lambs from Kilkerran Est or 220.3p for Beltex from Messrs Watson, Knockbreck, Straiton.

Cast ewes sold to £123 for a pure Texel from John McFadzean and Co, Broadshean, with cast tups to £84.50 for a Suffolk from C and L Dempsey, Brickrow. Overall, the 27 cast tups averaged £61.40, 100 heavy ewes at £70.41 and158 lights levelled at £39.42.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 179 prime and cast cattle where 11 heifers averaged 211.1p or £1096.56 and four bullocks averaged 195p or £1140.94.

Top price was 238p paid for a Limousin heifer from Creochhill or £1379.40 for a Limousin from Knockgerran. Bullocks were topped at 235p and £1398.25 for a Limousin from Glendoune.

The rough ring saw four bulls average 125p, 70 beef cows levell at 90.8p, 72 dairy types at 90.8p and 18 clean cattle at 130.3p.

St Boswells

Harrison and Hetherington's weekly prime sale on Monday saw 70 clean cattle, 31 cast cows, 1399 hoggs and 375 ewes, forward where 24 bullocks average 215.62p and 43 heifers levelled at 245p.

Top price was £1420.08 from Bee Edge, or 261p from Penston.

The 31 cast cows averaged 127.79p having sold to 183p from Kedzlie and £1117.20 from Boon.

Some 1400 prime hoggs sold similar on the week to average 191p per kg, with top prices of £107 paid for Beltex from Wester Ulston and 259p per kg for Beltex from Halidean Mill.

Ewes (375) averaged £64 selling to £117 fro Texels from Nether Kidston. Heavy ewes averaged £77 with light ewes at £47.

Carlisle

ON Monday, Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of prime stock saw a larger show of 520 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with a smaller entry of 1750 prime and cast sheep forward.

The 395 cast cattle peaked at 232.5p per kg and £2162 paid for a 930kg British Blue cow from Messrs Telfer and Son, Newton High House, while black and whites sold to 174.5p or £1142 for a 655kg Holstein from Messrs Fearon, Low Row Scales.

Prime steers and heifers (53) met a sharper trade with a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle, achieving £1672.59. Top price per kg was 227.5p for a steer from Messrs Story, Newbigging Farm, Carlisle.

Heifers hit a top of £1523.04 and 250.5p from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle.

Prime old season lambs averaged 194p with and SQQ average of 207p. Top price was £117.80 paid for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport, or 281p for Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop.

Cast sheep (260) were topped at £111 for Texel ewes from D Waugh, Albyfield.

Castle Douglas

ON Tuesday, Wallets Marts sold 1467 prime and cast sheep, where a smaller show of 1259 prime hoggs sold dearer on the week to a top of £94 and 223.8p per kg paid for Texel crosses from Messrs Henderson, Breconside.

The SQQ average was 198.55p whilst the overall average lifted by 8p on the week to level at 187.98p.

Ewes were dearer selling to £97 for Texels from Lennox Plunton to average £55.44 per head.

Dingwall

PRIME old season lambs improved on the week at Dingwall and Highland Mart's sale of 1065 sheep on Tuesday, to average 198.1p (+5.4p) having sold to 226.2p per kg for 42kg Beltex crosses and £99 per head for 45kg Beltex from Torgorm, Conon Bridge.

The SQQ for 587 was 205.1p (+6.9p).

Prime cattle (17) sold to 221.0p per kg for a 545kg Limousin cross heifer from Bridgend Farm and £1373.50 for a 670kg Charolais cross from Mountrich Farm, Dingwall. The 16 heifers averaged 205.5p.
