Cockermouth

MITCHELLS Livestock Centre’s weekly sale of primestock comprised 33 cull cattle, five prime bulls and 1219 prime sheep to include 1019 hoggs and 200 cast ewes and rams.

Top price per kg amongst the cattle was 169.5p paid for a Holstein Friesian bull from B Burrough, Waites Farm, Pardshaw, while a Limousin cast bull from N Gill, Stonethwaite, made £1226.07.

A smaller show of hoggs met an improved trade with an SQQ average of 205.9p, up 11.2p on the week.

Top price was £130 for a Texel hogg from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, Bewaldeth, while a Beltex made 287.5p per kg for AJ Wood, Woodhall Brow, Dean.

Dumfries

SOME 70 prime cattle forward for C and D Auction Marts’ sale at Dumfries, saw 12 clean heifers sell to 227p per kg for a Limousin heifer from Waterside.

The 58 OTM cattle peaked at £1188 for a Limousin cow from Waterside and 165p per kg for the same animal.

Overall, 41 dairy cattle averaged 90.4p having sold to 147p for a Holstein from Drum and £1029 for a Friesian from Woodhead.

Beef cows (14) averaged 112.1p.

Prime hoggs (500) hit a top of 200p per kg and£100 per head, for Texels from Lanarkland, with the 374 cast sheep selling to £141 for Texel ewes from Glenhowan.

Forfar

AT Forfar, Lawrie and Symington, sold 25 prime cattle and 725 prime sheep and cast ewes.

The eight bullocks sold to 2.39p per kg for a 653kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and £1585.92 for a 708kg Limousin from the same home, to average 232p.

The same breed from Nethermyres also topped the 17 heifers which averaged 241p, at 256p and £1507.84.

Top price per kg amongst the hoggs was 222p paid for Beltex from Scobshaugh while Texels from Newmill of Inshewan, led the gross trade at £106. SQQ hoggs averaged 200.2p while the overall average was 192.1p, (+1.2p).

Penrith

A GOOD entry of 3287 prime sheep was forward for Penrith and District Farmers’ weekly sale which comprised 1063 cast ewes and rams and 2224 prime hoggs, where an SQQ average of 210p per kg was achieved.

Top price per kg was 272p paid for 39kg Beltex hoggs from MPT and SD Wills, Fawcett Park.

Heavy lambs were £10 per head sharper and sold to £109 for 54kg Beltex hoggs from RW and G Dickinson, High Knipe.

Cast ewes and rams also met a sharper trade, selling to £138 for Texel ewes from AD and FE Elliott, Askrigg Hall.

Stirling (Cal)

SOME 210 cattle comprising 83 bullocks, heifers and young bulls and 102 OTM cattle as well as 25 calves, were sold through Caledonian Marts last week, where cattle from W Dandie and Son, Learielaw, Broxburn, led the trade.

They sold to 262p and £1537 for Limousin heifers, while bullocks sold to 245p and £1568 for a British Blue again from Learielaw.

Young bulls sold to 208p for a British Blue from Dalchirla Farms, Muthill, and £1475 for a Limousin from S Dick, Westerton, Cowie.

Well fleshed beef cows averaged 114p having sold to 142p for a Simmental from Goldenlea Farmers, Gryffewraes, and £1040 for the same breed from H Greer, Gelvan View.

Leading the dairy cow trade, which averaged 85p, at 127p and £840 was an entry from R and W Waugh, Summerhouse, Avonbridge. And cast bulls sold to 139p, and £1480 for Limousin from J Brewster, Boclair, Bearsden.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 1550 prime hoggs, ewes and tups, where the SQQ average was 202.6p for 706, with an overall average of 192p (+11.7p) for 1306 achieved.

Top price per head at £101 was shared by 56kg Beltex from WM Bell and Son, Craigend, Perth, and JB Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Muthill. Craigend also produced the lead price per kg at 230p paid for 39.6kg Beltex.

Also forward were 244 cast ewes and tups, which saw heavy ewes average £70.51 having sold to £100 for a Texel from G McGregor and Sons, Binn, Glenfarg. Light ewes averaged £43.36 selling to £66 for a Cheviot from JAC Stewart, Kinninmonth, Ceres.

Cast tups peaked at £86 for a Texel from I and G Farmer, Balbedie, Kinglassie.

Stirling (UA)

PRIME hoggs averaged 192.6p per kg at United Auctions’ sale of 4102 old season lambs and 958 ewes and rams, were cashed

Hoggs sold to £110 for Beltex from Harviesmailing and for Texels from South Flanders. Top price per kg was 253p for Texels from West Park.

Ewes reached £136 for Texels from Humeston, while rams sold to £99 for a Texel from Downfield.

Longtown

AT Longtown last Thursday, C and D Auction Marts had forward 17 cast cows, 5073 prime hoggs and 3265 cast ewes and rams.

Blue grey bullocks from Sark Tower topped the bullocks at 156p, while cast cows peaked at £1093 for a Limousin from JP Lee, Morley Hill, Hexham.

A larger show of quality hoggs attracted additional buyers as numbers tighten and an overall average of 202.1p with an SQQ of 207.8p.

Most Beltex and Texel hoggs sold between 220-250p, and to a top of 297p for Beltex from R and S Nixon and Co, Oakwood, Selkirk.

Top price per head was £119 paid for Beltex hoggs from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Crieff.

Cast sheep were up £5 on the week, selling to £157 and £156, with hill ewes selling to £69 for Cheviots from WD and RJ Thorburn, Parks, Beattock and rams to £110 for Beltex from Broughton Mains and for Suffolks from Roxburgh Mains, Kelso.

Thainstone

SOME 37 prime cattle were sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts, where bullocks sold to 233p per kg for a 520kg Limousin from The Byre, Turriff, and £1310 for a 655kg Simmental from Newton of Drum, Drumoak, to average 201p.

Heifers hit a top of 231p for a 560kg Limousin from The Byre, Turriff, and £1413.75 for a 725kg entry of the same breed from South Crichie, St Katherines. They averaged 210p per kg.

Young bulls (three) averaged 160.6p and sold to 167p per kg for a 580kg Simmental from Bridgend, Tyrie, and £1699.50 for a 1030kg Charolais from Tillenturk, Torphins.

The firm also sold 2766 prime sheep, which saw 1710 hoggs average 190p (+8.9p), having sold to 230.3p per kg for 33kg Texels from Kylieford, Duncanstone, and £111 for 63kg Texels from Milton of Durris, Durris.

Feeding ewes and rams (1056) peaked at £139 for Texels from Milton of Noth, Rhynie.

St Boswells

PRIME cattle averages slipped on the week at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale where 15 bullocks cashed in at 214p (-1.6p) and 35 heifers levelled at 217p (-1.8p).

Top price per kg was 243p paid for an entry from Penston, or £1506.60 from Bee Edge.

In contrast cast cows improved by 5p on the week to average 132p. The 70 head sold to 208p from Penston and to £1564 from Wester Middleton.

Prime hoggs were also a good trade with the 1945 head averaging 196p per kg, (+5p) having sold to 256.8p for Beltex from Newton and £122 for Texels from Butterdean.

Ewes averaged £63.74 and sold to £143 for Texels from Headshaw. Heavy ewes averaged £74 and lights at £50.

Ayr

PRIME hoggs were sharper on the week at Craig Wilson’s sale of 1222 head, on Monday at Ayr, where an overall average of 195.6p per kg with an SQQ of 201.6p was achieved.

Top price was £102 paid for Beltex from J Kennedy and Son, Perryston, or 228.4p per kg for the same breed from J Frame, Blairston Mains, Alloway.

A bigger show of 641 cast sheep saw export ewes sharper, however heavy ewes would only be slightly dearer on the week. Top price was £127 for Texels from J Paterson, Oxenshaw. Tups sold to £98 for a Bluefaced Leicester from J Guild, Ashmark.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 164 prime and cast cattle, which saw 19 heifers average 212.4p per kg or £1146.19, while three bullocks cashed in at 211.9p, or £1158.53.

Heifers peaked at 246p and £1377.60 for a Limousin from High Gameshill, with bullocks selling to 229p and £1190.80 for the same breed from Knockgerran.

Some 11 dairy cattle were also sold to £1980 for a heifer from Perryston, to average £1514.54.

Beef cows peaked at £1210 for an Angus from Fisherton or 139.4p per kg for a British Blue off Dykes, Auchinleck, with the 53 head averaging 116.41p per kg.

The 78 dairy cattle levelled at 90.63p and sold to 111.1p and £900 for a Friesian from Isle Farm.

Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of primestock on Monday saw beef cast cows rise 7.5p per kg on the week.

The entry of 395 cast cattle peaked at 232.5p or £2162 for a 930kg British Blue from Messrs Telfer and Son, Newton High House.

Black and white cows were also 7p up on the week and sold to 174.5p and £1142 for a Holstein from Messrs Fearon, Low Row Scales.

Prime bulls (81) sold to £1821.85 for a Limousin from Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby, while the 53 steers and heifers selling to £1672.59 for a bullock from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle, and to 227.5p from Messrs Story, Newbigging Farm, Carlisle.

Heifers peaked at 250.5p and £1523.04 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle.

Dingwall

ON Tuesday, Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 18 prime cattle, which saw six bullocks average 208.1p, (-2.9p) and 12 heifers at 208.8p (+3.3p).

Bullocks sold to 212p per kg for a 515kg Limousin cross and £1359.60 for a 660kg Aberdeen Angus cross both from Bridgend, Dingwall.

Top price per kg amongst the heifers was 214p paid for a 575kg Limousin cross from Mountgerald, Dingwall, and £1327.15 for a 635kg entry of the same breed from Bridgend.

The entry of 1419 prime sheep, saw 1271 old season lambs average 196.8p (-1.3p) having sold to 241p for 39kg Beltex crosses from Leanach, Inverness and £100 for 48kg Charollais crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. The SQQ for 1011 lambs was 201.3p, (-3.8p), with the overall average for 1272 head being 196.8p.

The 147 feeding sheep sold to £90 for a Texel ram from Inveruglas Farm, Kingussie.

Castle Douglas

A LESSER show of 1259 prime hoggs met a dearer trade on the week at Wallets Marts’ sale on Monday, where a top price of £94 per head 223.8p per kg kg was paid Texel crosses from Messrs Henderson, Breconside.

The SQQ average was 198.55p whilst the overall average rose by 8p on the week to 187.98p

Ewes were dearer on the week selling to £97 for Texels from Lennox Plunton, to average £55.44 per head.

Newton Stewart

ON Wednesday, Craig Wilson sold 1375 prime and cast sheep, where the entry of 1238 prime hoggs sold dearer on the week to average 191.5p per kg.

Heavyweights sold to £95 for 50kg Beltex from Andre Bodle, Dirnow, while lightweights peaked at 220p per kg for 41g Texels from Allan McCaig, Mount Pleasant.

The 360 Blackface hoggs averaged 190.2p peaking at £90 from P McMillan, Glenchamber and to 198p per kg from Messrs Mitchell, Little Larg.

Cast sheep sold to £85 for a Bluefaced Leicester ewe from C Craig, Cairnhouse. Overall, 83 light ewes averaged £42.91 and 54 heavy ewes levelled at £62.09
