SOME 103 prime cattle were forward for C and D Auction Marts' held their weekly sale which sold to 212p per kg for an Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer from Innerfield.

The entry of 98 OTM cattle peaked at £1169.60 and 136p per kg from Crawthat.

Also forward were 1050 sheep, with 743 prime hoggs selling to £91.50 from Moorfoot House. Cast sheep (307) reached £101.50 for Texel ewes from Laightmuirside, while rams sold to £86 for Lleyns from Dalmakethar.


Penrith and District Farmers’ weekly prime sale saw 2395 prime hoggs and 1188 cast ewes and rams forward where an SQQ average of 202p per kg was achieved.

Top price per kg was 270p paid for a pair of 40kg Beltex from MH Elliott, Espland House, and £111 per head for heavy hoggs from MTP and SD Wills, Fawcett Park.

Cast ewes and rams peaked at £143 for Texel ewes.


At Forfar, Lawrie and Symington sold 24 prime cattle and eight OTM, as well as 603 prime sheep and cast ewes.

The nine prime bullocks sold to 238p twice, for a 626kg Limousin from Mill of Inverarity and a 629kg Limousin from Nethermyres, which was sold for the top price per head of £1497.02. The average was 229p.

Heifers (15) peaked at 264p for a 534kg Limousin from West Bog and £1432.37 for a 631kg Limousin from Gask, to average 235p.

Prime hoggs (400) sold to 220.7p per kg for Texels from Torrax and £100 per head from Torrax and Easter Balgillo. SQQ hoggs averaged 197.1p, with an overall average of 189.4p.


Mitchells Livestock Centre's weekly sale saw 40 cull cattle and nine prime bulls and clean cattle, and 1106 hoggs and 429 cast ewes and rams come under the hammer.

A good show of prime bulls was led by a Limousin bull from Messrs Teasdale, Lowside, which made 209.5p per kg, while a similarly bred entry from A and L Gott, Prospect House, made £1463.67.

Prime hoggs were topped at 263.5p per kg from A and J Clark, Cherrytree House and £120 per head for a Beltex from Messrs Richardson, Low Garth. The SQQ was 197.38p.

Stirling (Cal)

Caledonian Marts sold 174 cattle, comprising 88 prime and 86 OTM cattle where Limousin-bred cattle topped the main sections.

Prime heifers reached 258p from W Dandie, Learielaw, and £1551 from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie.

Bullocks were topped at 252p again from W Dandie, and £1630 from C Smith, South Flanders, Stirling.

Young bulls sold to 210p twice from W and R Thompson, Cairnbog, Kilsyth, and £1519 for another Limousin from W Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling.

OTM beef cattle averaged 137p, selling to 188p for a Charolais cross from G McGregor, Binn, Glenfarg, to £1530 twice for Limousins from JH and NT Turnbull, Meadowend, Clackmannan. The overall average including feeding OTMs was 128p.

On Tuesday, the firm sold 1366 prime hoggs, ewes and tups, in conjunction with their annual show and sale of prime Beltex hoggs.

Champion was a pen of 50kg Beltex from WM Bell and Son, Craigend, that sold at £130, while the reserve from Craig Malone, Pitcairn, scaled 43kg and made £100.

Outwith the prize list, the overall average for 909 sold was 182.5p.

Also forward were 466 cast ewes and tups, which saw heavy ewes average £68.76 having sold to £98 for Texels from DL Young, Finmont, Kinglassie, while lights cashed in at £41.50, selling to £56 for Cheviots from R Dewey, Lathockar Mains, St Andrews.

Cast tups sold to £96 for a Texel from R Sibbald, Thorn, Dollar.

Stirling (UA)

SOME 5943 prime sheep were forward for United Auctions’ weekly sale where 3891 hoggs sold to 256.0p per kg for Beltex from Coilavoulin and £110 for more of the same from Luckenburn, to average 185.54p per kg.

The 2023 ewes and rams hit a top of £139 for Texel ewes from Townhead of Arngibbon.


At Thainstone, Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 42 prime cattle, where bullocks averaged 196.5p having sold to 213p per kg and £1427.10 gross for a 670kg Limousin Cross from Cairnbo, Gamrie.

Heifers averaged 199.2p selling to 225p and £1372.50 for a 610kg Limousin cross from Govals, Kincaldrum.

The two young bulls peaked at 169p and £937.95 for a 555kg Salers cross from Darnford, Durris.

The firm also sold 2052 prime hoggs which averaged 179.7p, having sold to 225.6p per kg for 39kg Texels from Hallhill, Kinneff and £97 for 59kg Texels from Tofthills, Clatt.

The 2074 old season SQQ lambs averaged 189.5p per kg.

Feeding ewes and rams (896) sold to £145.50 for Texels from Milton of Birness, Ellon.


THE WEEKLY prime sale at Longtown conducted by C and D Auction Marts saw 30 cast cows, 4811 prime hoggs and 5229 cast ewes and rams forward.

Cast cows were topped at 122p per kg and £799 for a Limousin from Devonport Farms, Blakelaw, Hexham.

Beltex hoggs from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, again topped the prime hoggs selling at 303p and £122 from the same home. The overall average was 191.2p with an SQQ of 199.2p.

Again, a large entry of 5,229 cast ewes and rams attracted sixteen buyers from all areas. Trade was buoyant throughout with trade very similar on the week. 482 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £120.26.

Ewes sold to £159 for Texel from G Wilkinson, Arkleby House, with rams to £130 for more of the same from Messrs Gass and Martin, Aldery Terrace, Canonbie.


ON MONDAY, Lawrie and Symington sold 151 cattle where prime heifers sold to 252p per kg from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie, and £1470 from Auchenstarry.

Bullocks sold to 227p per kg from R Warnock, Hill Farm, Strathaven, and £1383 from Carlindean.

Also forward were 2685 hoggs and 1513 cast ewes which were topped at £112 for Texels from R and M Struthers, Collielaw, Carluke, and to 261p per kg for Beltex from High Crewburn.

Cast ewes and rams (1513) peaked at £145 for Texels from J Gibb, Toftcombs.


Some 2231 prime sheep comprising 1659 hoggs and 566 cast ewes and tups, were forward for Craig Wilson's sale on Monday where a Beltex from M Stevenson, Balcaimie, led the trade at £103 per head.

Top price per kg was 210.5p paid for Beltex from James McGill, Altewan.

The whole sale average weight was again over 45kg with the average per kg being 183.6p.

A smaller show of 566 cast sheep peaked at £118 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Allan, Arnsow, Kirkmichael. The 166 heavy ewes averaged £69.49, while 385 light ewes averaged £44.50 and 15 tups levelled at £69.40.

On Tuesday the firm sold 124 prime and cast cattle where 14 heifers averaged 213.3p or £1163.82 having sold to 231p per kg or £1316.70 for a Limousin from Mansfield Mains.

The sole bullock forward sold at 209p or £1055.45 for a Limousin from Kilbride, with one young bull, a Montbeliarde from Knockeffrick, making 155p or £914.50.

Beef cows were topped at £1260 or 152.7p per kg for a Limousin from South Craigton, while dairy cows sold to 108.4p or £900 for a Friesian from Knockshiffnock.

St Boswells

ON Monday, Harrison and Hetherington's weekly primestock sale saw 56 clean cattle, 74 cast cows, 1212 hoggs and 504 ewes, forward.

Some 17 averaged 207p per kg while the 37 heifers levelled at 214p. Top price was 258p per kg and £1480.92 for entries from Bee Edge.

Cast cows averaged 128p having sold 173p from Shaws and £1391.94 from Inland Pastures.

Also forward were 1212 hoggs which averaged 182p per kg. They peaked at £108 for Texels from Sydenham and 270p per kg for Beltex from Newton, Crathie.

The 504 ewes averaged £52 having sold to £140 for Beltex from Attonburn Farm Cottage.

Castle Douglas

On Tuesday, Wallets Marts sold 1315 prime and cast sheep when 773 prime hoggs sold to average 183.88p with an SQQ of 187.21p.

Top per head was £94.50 paid for Texels from Messrs McGhie, Mid Threave, Kirkcowan, while top per kg was 224.2p for Beltex lambs from Messrs McConnell, Gass, Glenluce.

The 542 cast sheep peaked at £120.50 for Texel ewes from Tappit Lane.


Dingwall and Highland Marts sold four prime heifers to average 211.0p, on Tuesday with top prices of 213.0p per kg and £1354.50 paid for 630kg and 645kg Limousin crosses from Easter Strath of Auchterflow, Killen, and Easter Strath of Auchterflow, respectively.

Also sold were 1295 prime sheep, where old season lambs (1236) averaged 183.9p, having sold to 230.8p for 39kg Beltex crosses from Leanach, Inverness, and £100 for Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. SQQ lambs (972) averaged 188.4p.

Feeding sheep (59) sold to £130 for a Texel ewe from Lochdhu, Nairn.


ON Tuesday, Hopes Auction Mart sold 937 prime hoggs to average 225.71p with an SQQ of 233p. John and Joanne Hall, Inglewood Edge, topped the sale with Beltex at £120 per head and more of the same at 311.9p per kg.

Newton Stewart

Craig Wilson's prime sheep sale on Wednesday saw 838 hoggs average 180.4p per kg with a top price of 204p paid for Texels crosses from Messrs Templeton, Carslae.

Beltex from A Wright, Pinmore Mains sold for £95.

The 405 Blackface hoggs averaged 178.4p peaking at £90 for heavyweights from D Fergusson Drannandow and 191.4 p for lightweights from I McFadzean Glenvernoch.
