THERE was an entry of 438 head of store cattle at Hexham and Northern’s sale where trade peaked at £1370 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Walton, Ogle Castle, while the top heifer was a Limousin cross from James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown, which made £1340.

The sale of 855 cast sheep was topped by two Suffolk tups from W Walton and Sons, Ogle Castle, that sold for £108. Store hoggs (1651) sold to £116 per head for a pen of 10 pure Beltex from HC Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle.

Heifers sold to £1185 for Limousins off Trolane and to 216.3p for Limousin crosses from Nether Barr. Overall averages were 204.2p for bullocks and 190.5p for heifers.

A smaller show of 16 OTM cattle met a stronger demand, with grazing types selling to 132p per kg or £675 for a Simmental cross, while finished cows topped twice at 131p for Simmental crosses and to £1037.50 whilst heifers sold to 140p per kg and £935. Cast bulls made to 94p for a Stabiliser and £1085.60 for an Aberdeen-Angus.

Store sheep (349) were forward and sold to £80.50 for Texels from Midtown and averaged £61.25.
