Dumfries

LAST Wednesday, C and D Auction Marts sold some 58 prime cattle to 232p per kg for a Limousin cross heifer from J Jardine, Yett. OTM cattle (56) sold to £1372.80 for a Limousin bull from Holmhead.

There were 831 prime hoggs forward, selling to 226p per kg for Texels from Harleyrigg, and to £96 for Texels from Cleughbrae.

Ewes sold to £137.50 for a Texel from Rigghead, while rams sold to £76 for a Cheviot from Hall.

Penrith

Prime bulls met a sharp trade at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart’s sale where D Raine, Old Parks, sold three Limousins to average £1470.85 with top prices of £1494.26, and 199.5p per kg.

The sale of 2555 prime hoggs saw an SQQ average of 215p per kg achieved, with lead prices of 286p and £106, paid for a pen of six 37kg Beltex hoggs from R and JM Ridley, Ranbeck.

Cast ewes and rams (796) met an even better trade, with 10 Texel ewes selling for £145 per head. A total of 100 heavy ewes sold for more than £100 to average £110.89.

Horned ewes saw the largest lift, with A and N Bennett, Hollins Farm selling Swaledale ewes to £65, and Herdwick ewes sold to £52 for 45 from JR Weir, Borrowdale.

Wooler

THE weekly sale of prime hoggs at Harrison and Hetherington’s Wooler mart produced an SQQ average of 200p.

Top prices were £100 and 238p per kg for Texels from Craigs House.

Ewes were in high demand and sold to £129 from Wrangham.

Forfar

LAWRIE and Symington had forward 40 prime cattle and 509 prime sheep and cast ewes.

Bullocks (10) sold to 234p per kg for a 584kg Limousin from Nochnary and £1438.80 for a 654 kg Limousin from Nethermyres to average 2.17p.

Heifers (30) reached 249p per kg for a 519kg Limousin from Nethermyres and £1375.88 for a 583 kg Limousin from Mill of Inverarity to level at 222p.

Some 369 prime hoggs sold to 226.2p per kg twice for Beltex from Balbrydie and £97 per head on three occasions for Beltex from Scobshaugh twice and Cairncortie.

SQQ hoggs averaged 202.1p per kg, with an overall average of 189.5p.

Cockermouth

SOME 33 prime cattle sold through Mitchells Livestock Centre, selling to 213.5p per kg for a Limousin bull from G and AE Marrs and Son, Cathow and £1455.63 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Teasdale, Lowside.

The 1514 prime sheep sold to 246.3p for a pen of Texel hoggs from A and L Gott, Prospect House. Top price per head was £113 achieved twice from WS Jackson, Nook, with Texels.

Huntly

UNITED Auctions sold 1996 old season lambs to 231p per kg for a 36kg Texel from Burnlea House, Castletown, and £94.50 for 57kg Beltex from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer.

The 1661 ewes peaked at £139 for Suffolks from Hilton of Culsh with rams to £107 for a Texel from Birkenburn.

Stirling (UA)

AT Stirling, United Auctions sold 4328 prime hoggs, to average 190p with 2330 SSQ hoggs averaging 197.66p

Beltex hoggs from Doune Farms, topped the sale at £117 and 273p per kg.

Ewes (1124) sold to £138.00 for Charollais from Langside, while rams peaked at 3104 for Suffolks from Headshaw.

Stirling (Cal)

CALEDONIAN Marts sold 85 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, and 76 OTM cattle, where heifers reached 242p for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, and £1457 for a Limousin from J and J Wylie, Knockhouse, Crossford.

Prime bullocks were topped at 238p for a Limousin from TH Gray, Balquharrage, Lennoxtown, and £1480 for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn.

Young bulls sold to 212p for a Limousin from W Dick and Sons, Mains of Throsk, Throsk, and £1351 from the same home.

A large show of heavy hoggs resulting in the trade being easier on the week, with 1793 selling to average 187.5ppkg. The 836 SQQ hoggs averaged 200.4p per kg.

Top price of the day went to Doune Farms, West Lundie, for a Beltex hogg at £110. Top price per kg went to JM McDonald, Newbigging, for a pen of 37kg hoggs at 254p.

Thainstone

AT Thainstone, Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 13 prime bullocks to average 188.4p from a top price of 212p per kg from Whiteside, Tullynessle, and £1389.45 from Mill of Meadaple, Rothienorman.

The 18 prime heifers averaged 198.8p having sold to 233p per kg from Whiteside, and £1305.25 from Govals, Kincaldrum.

Young bulls (six) averaged 154.6p and sold to 185p from Tocherford, Wartle, and £1404 from Kinclune, Glenkindie.

The firm also sold 3583 prime sheep and feeding ewes and rams.

Old season lambs (2766) averaged 190.1p having sold to 245p per kg for 40kg Beltex from Belnaboth, Glenkindie, and £100 for 55kg Continentals from Craskins, Tarland. The SQQ average was 202.7p per kg.

The 817 feeding ewes and rams sold to £135 for Texels from Woodhead, Cairness.

Longtown

LAST Thursday, C and D Auction Marts had forward 5571 prime hoggs and 4382 cast ewes and rams, and a small entry of prime cattle which saw Charolais heifers sell to 198p, £1336, from BE Davidson, Bellsfield, Longtown.

Limousin cows sold to 133p and 130p for JP Lee, Morley Hill and to 120p from S Dalton, Greenside.

Prime hoggs averaged 186.7p, SQQ 198.8p, topping at 315p for Beltex hoggs from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, with others to 313p from J Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Crieff.

The mart also held their annual show and sale of prime hill and North Country Cheviot hoggs which saw the championship go to NB Conaghan, West Scales, Gretna, with a pen scaling 45kg and realising £100.

The reserve champions, from Bridgewater and Wood, Potholm, Langholm, weighed 39kg and made £84.

The North Country Cheviot Championship was awarded to Messrs Walker, Raeburnfoot, Eskdalemuir, with 45kg hoggs which made £90.

Ayr

ON Monday, Craig Wilson sold some 1741 prime hoggs and 485 cast ewes and tups, with SQQ lambs averaging 202.7p.

Top price of the day was £98 for a pair of Beltex from James Shennan and Sons, Knockgerran, and 222p for a pair of Texels from Daniel Hodge, Dykes.

The 450 Blackface hoggs levelled at 187.2p and were topped at £91 for a pen from Andrew Paton and Co, Craig, and 208.8p for a pen from James Shennan and Sons, Knockgerran. The whole sale averaged 184.5p.

Orkney

ORKNEY Auction Mart had forward eight prime cattle, nine OTM cows as well as 307 prime hoggs, 206 store hoggs and 75 cast sheep.

Prime cattle peaked at 226p per kg for a Limousin heifer from J and R Stanger, South Seatter, Sandwick. Scaling 535kg, it made £1209.10.

OTM cows sold to 121.3p for a 610kg cow from J and M Slater, Millquoy, Stenness, realising £740.

A 49kg Texel from G Henry, Howe, Harray, topped the sale of prime hoggs at £100.

St Boswells

HARRISON AND Hetherington sold 55 clean cattle, 21 cast cows, 792 hoggs and 231 ewes.

Bullocks (20) averaged 206.52p per kg and sold to 229p from Bee Edge, while 35 heifers averaged 214.58p per kg and sold to 245p for another from Bee Edge.

The 21 cast cows averaged 122p per kg and sold to 159p and £1252.92 from Butchercote.

Some 792 hoggs averaged 184.63p per kg and sold to 239p from Wester Ulston and £112 for Texel hoggs from Lylestane.

An average of £65.67 was achieved for the 231 ewes, which sold to £131 twice for Suffolk cross and Texel ewes.

Castle Douglas

ON Tuesday, Wallets Marts had forward 999 prime and cast sheep, with prime hoggs averaging 193.23p and SQQ 203.66p.

Top price per head was £100 for heavy Texels from Messrs Burns, Craignell, while Beltex from Craigview, Springholm, made 230.2p.

The 253 cast sheep sold to £107.50 for Texel rams from Rascarrel, while Greyface ewes sold to £79.50 from Valleyhead, and Blackface to £69.50 from Speddoch.

Dingwall

THERE were six prime cattle forward at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale, where five heifers averaged 203.6p per kg and sold to 208p and £1331.20 gross for a 640kg Limousin cross from Easter Strath of Auchterflow.

The single bullock, a 635kg Limousin cross, sold at 209p per kg and £1327.15.

The firm sold 1204 prime sheep, with 1142 hoggs averaging 190.9p and sold to 224.7p and £97 from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. The SQQ average for 988 was 194.1p.

Feeding sheep (62) sold to £83 twice for Texel cross ewes from Inveruglas, Kingussie and a Texel cross ewe from Easter Dalziel Farm, Dalcross.

Wigton

HOPES sold 14 prime cattle at Wigton to a top of 226.5p per kg for a 615kg Blonde heifer from DA Harrison, Hill House.

Six bulls sold to 179.5p for an Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close.

Their sale of 1071 prime hoggs saw an overall average of 232.04p or SQQ of 250.1p. Topping the sale was W Robshaw who sold a pen of Beltex at £134, and another pen at 341p per kg.

Prime ewes (153) sold to £155 for a pair of Dutch Texels from Messrs Steel, The Laurels.
