IN Newton Stewart, five prime lambs sold to £105 or 223.4p per kg for Dorset lambs from Messrs Walker, Barwhinnoch, to average 222.5p per kg.

A mixed show 768 hoggets saw the best types meet the dearest trade of the season to average out at 194.7p per kg.

Top price was 228.6p per kg paid for Texel hoggets from Messrs Alison, Glenstables, or £102.50 for Texels from Messrs McCall, Brigton.

A poorer show of cast sheep remained easy to cash and saw a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Jones, Baing, sell for £135.

Mule ewes sold to £79.50 and £77 from T McMillian, Orchardton, with Blackface ewes to £65 on two occasions first from W Barrie Barholm and then from Messrs Douglas, Barlauchlan.

Tups sold to £64 for Blackfaces from D Brown, Palgowan.

Dumfries

SOME 85 cattle were forward at C and D Auction Marts’ weekly sale, which sold to 226p per kg for a Limousin cross heifer from J and L Craik, Waterside.

OTMs were forward in greater numbers with 63 dairy cows averaging 111.9p per kg having sold to 148p and £1143.90. The 19 beef animals averaged 123p per kg having sold to 132p per kg and £967.50.

The 327 prime hoggs sold to 233p per kg for Cheviots from Nether Cargen and to £110 for Texels from New Mains.

Some 169 cast ewes and rams sold with Texel ewes reaching £162 from Castlehill and Texel rams to £127 from the same home.

Forfar

LAWRIE and Symington had forward 27 cattle and 459 sheep and cast ewes and rams at it's weekly prime sale.

Eight bullocks sold to a top of 243p per kg for a 575kg Limousin from Nethermyres, and to £1456.39 for a 659kg Limousin from Woodhead of Mailer, to average 218p.

Heifers (19) peaked at 252p per kg for a 549kg Limousin from Nethermyres and to £1451.88 for a 654kg Limousin from Gask, to average 231p.

Prime spring lambs sold to £113.50 for a Suffolk from Wester Oathlaw, while 408 prime hoggs sold to 239.1p per kg for Beltex from The Horn and to £110 per head also from The Horn and Torrax.

The SQQ average was 210p, while the overall average for a plainer show was 195p.

Cockermouth

On Wednesday April 24, Mitchells Livestock Centre, held their weekly sale of primestock which saw 60 cattle comprising 42 cull cattle and 18 prime bulls and clean cattle, and 844 prime sheep to include 631 hoggs and 213 cast ewes and rams forward.

Leading the cattle trade per kg at 213.5p per kg was a Limousin heifer from Messrs Teasdale, Lowside.

Cast cows peaked at £1177.39 for a British Blue from Eirinntalla.

Strong demand for prime sheep saw the SQQ average rise 11.2p to 202.6p.

Top price per kg in this section was 254.80p paid for a 42kg Texel hogg from Messrs Sharp, Holmecroft, while a Texel hogg from Messrs Mounsey, Wardhall Guards, made £118.

Huntly

ALMOST 1700 head of prime old season lambs were sold through United Auctions' sale at Huntly, where trade peaked at 249p per kg for a 35kg Texel from Clatequoy, Thurso.

Top per head was £109 paid for 62kg Texel from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer.

Ewes continue to cash in at recent high rates and sold to £155 for Texels from Weston.

Stirling (UA)

UNITED Auctions sale of 6243 prime sheep included 119 new season lambs which averaged 242.8p, and sold to £128 for Texels from Smailholm Mains, and 277p for a Suffolk from West Carse.

The 5147 old season lambs sold at Stirling averaged 192.9p and were topped at £115 by Beltex from Isle Cottage, and 263p for Beltex from Ballechin.

Some 863 ewes peaked at £142 for Texels from Blinkbonny, while rams were topped at £118 for the same breed from Townhead.

Stirling (Cal)

Some 82 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls were sold through Caledonian Marts’ sale.

The sale was topped at 248p per kg for a British Blue bullock from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, and £1602 for the same beast.

Prime heifers made up to 240p on three occasions – for Limousins from Learielaw; AS Hay, Mains of Cultmalundi, and DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill.

Top per head was £1534 paid for a Limousin from MI Wainwright and Sons, Todhall.

Fleshed beef OTMs averaged 153p having sold to 168p per kg for a Limousin from W Dick and Sons, Mains of Throsk and £1600 for a Limousin from WI and AW Callion, Bolfornought. The overall average for beef OTMs, including feeding cows, levelled at 144p per kg.

Dairy cows averaged 109p per kg selling to 159p from W Waugh, North Bankhead and to £950 for the same animal.

Cast bulls peaked at 137p from A Wilson, Redhouse and to £1400 from J Craig, Carneil.

On Tuesday, some 2161 prime sheep were cashed where 12 spring lambs sold to £120 per head and 255p per kg for a 47kg Texel from I and G Farmer, Balbedie.

Hoggets (1519) sold to £117 for a Beltex from J Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, and to 266p for a pen of six Beltex also from Easter Ochtermuthill. The overall average was 190p with an SQQ of 200p.

Thainstone

AT Thainstone, Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 19 prime bullocks to level at 211.9p having sold to 231p per kg for a 595kg Limousin cross from Mill of Newton, Insch, and £1458.60 for a 660kg Limousin cross from Tillyboy, Echt.

Prime heifers (33) averaged 214.5p peaking at 239p per kg for a 590kg Limousin cross from Hillocks, Whiterashes, and £1475.50 for a 650kg British Blue cross from Monlettie, Methlick.

Five young bulls averaged 168.4p and sold to 207p per kg and £1552.50 gross for a 750kg Simmental from Blackford, Croy.

Two new season lambs sold to 200p and £98 for 48kg Suffolks from Bilboa, Daviot.

Some 3728 old season lambs averaged 192.3p per kg having sold to 234.1p for 41kg Beltex and £107 for 54kg Texels from Culhay, Kildrummy.

Longtown

Cast cows again sold well at C and D Auction Marts’ sale where prices peaked at 152p for an Angus from TN Cavers and Co, Sorbie, Langholm, which also achieved the top price per head of £1109.

The 4623 prime hoggs met an overall average 207p with an SQQ 221.1p.

Top price per kg was 297p paid for Beltex hoggs from J Guthrie, Cuiltburn, Crieff.

The same home also produced the lead price per kg of 241p, for Beltex hoggs.

Lanark

LAWRIE and Symington had forward 127 cattle, comprising of 51 prime cattle, two young bulls and 74 cast cows and bulls.

A Limousin heifer led the trade at 250p per kg and £1415 per head for David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees Farm, Canonbie.

Bullocks peaked at £1380 from Gilmeadowland and 232p per kg from Castlehill.

Also forward were 2052 hoggs, 80 spring lambs and 954 cast ewes, where lambs sold to £119 twice for Texels from Messrs Marshall, Haggs, and G Robertson, Cauldcoats, and to 259p per kg from the same homes. The overall average was 214p, with an SQQ of 231p per kg.

Hoggs hit a top of £114 per head for Beltex from T Allan, Westmains, and 263p per kg for Beltex from Messrs Shanks, West Glespin. The overall average for old season lambs was 200p per kg, with an SQQ of 209p.

Another large show of 954 cast ewes and rams saw all classes remain dear, especially for leaner ewes and blackface ewes.

The sale was topped at £160 for Texels from W Boyd, Overburns, and £72 for Blackies from R Baxter, Gibblaston.

Ayr

SPRING lambs sold to 250p per kg and £114 per head for a Charollais cross from MA Simpson, Tardoes, at Craig Wilson's sale of 1648 sheep, comprising 1169 old season hoggs, 17 spring lambs and 462 cast ewes.

New season lambs averaged 233.4p.

Another mixed show of hoggs resulted in an overall sale average or190.6p, with an SQQ of 204.9p. Top price was £106 for a pen of Beltex from M Stevenson, Balcaimie.

Lead price per kg was 226.3p for a pen of Texels from J and H Reid, Auchengowan.

The 462 cast sheep of all types again sold sharper on the week.

Top price was £145 paid for a pure Texel from William Stevenson and Son, Auchenflower.

Rams sold to £120 for a Beltex from M and A Steel and Sons, Ditton.

St Boswells

On Monday at St Boswells, Harrison at Hetherington held their weekly primestock sale where 70 clean cattle, 60 cast cows, 30 new season lambs, 1154 hoggs and 327 ewes, were forward.

Bullocks (21) averaged 214.73p and 49 heifers levelled at 208.27p, with a top price of 242p paid for an entry from Faughill. Lead price per head was £1442.56 from Yester Mains.

The 60 cast cows averaged 148.4p per kg and sold to 175p and £1370 from Fordel Parks and Leaston, respectively.

New season lambs average 213p per kg having sold to £110 for a Suffolk from Ladyflat and 239.1p per kg for the same entry.

Leading the hogg entry at £109 was a Texel from Huntington or 224.1p per kg paid for the same breed from Lylestane.

Huntington also topped the ewe trade at £130 with Suffolks. Heavy ewes averaged £85 and lights £60.

Dingwall

On Tuesday, Dingwall and Highland Marts sold 15 prime cattle and 834 prime sheep.

Bullocks sold to 236p per kg and £1298.00 for a 550kg British Blue from Easter Sheeppark, Balblair.

Prime heifers (13) averaged 229.2p having sold to 238p for a 510kg Limousin cross from Balnageith, Forres, and £1374.75 for a 585kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall.

The firm's 686 old season lambs averaged 201.6p having sold to 235p per kg and £100 gross for a pen of 46kg Blackfaces from Torgorm, Conon Bridge. The SQQ lambs averaged 209.9p per kg.

Feeding sheep (148) sold to £118 for a Suffolk ewe from Glendonan, Knockfarrel.

Castle Douglas

THE 391 prime sheep at Wallets Marts’ sale averaged 190.66p with an SQQ 194.32.

Hoggs sold to 225p per kg and £128 per head for Texels from Messrs Sheddan, Balgerran, Crossmichael.

The 139 cast sheep were topped at £113.50 for Texels Carleton Farms and £92.50 for Cheviot Mule ewes from the Burn.
