It was a record-breaking day at the Southdown Sheep Society’s Premier Sale, Worcester, when Chaileybrook His Nibs topped the sale and set a new ram lamb record of 2000gns.
The lamb from Jonathan Long, Bishops Frome, Herefordshire, is sired by a home-bred Chaileybrook tup and out of a ewe by the imported Dartagnan sire. Male champion and reserve overall at the pre-sale show, and at the breed’s National Show at the Three Counties he sold to young breeder Scarlett Hale of the Sacombe flock, Herts, with the breeder retaining a half share.
Two ram sold for 1000gns including the second prize ram lamb from Annabel Halcrow’s Calley Castle flock. A son of Brant Ram, he caught the eye of Stephen Cobbald buying for the Lavenham flock, Suffolk.
Also making 1000gns was an East Dean shearling ram from Stephen and Paul Humphrey, Chichester, West Sussex. He’s by a home-bred sire and headed home with Gareth Lloyd Hughes, Aberystwyth.
Females peaked at 1600gns for the gimmer Beiliau Treaser from Louise and James Trumper, Abergavenny. Sired by Beiliau Rex she was another bought by Stephen Cobbald, Lavenham.
Another from the same home, Beiliau Toffee, and by the the same sire made 1200gns to Goodwood Estate.
Averages: 16 gimmers £486.28; five ewe lambs £304.50, 11 shearling rams £458.18, 14 ram lambs £626.25.
