The Firm of Lawrie and Symington was established on 22nd January 1862 and the company has been among the forefront of the business ever since.

The first livestock auction was held in Lanark in September 1867 when original owner Mr Lawrie, who had been in business locally as an auctioneer, and his nephew Mr Symington started a weekly sale of stock on a Monday, a weekly date that is still in the calendar in the present day.

n the 1940's the firm held sales of implements and farm machinery periodically on Monday afternoons and these have developed to such an extent that Lanark is also now the established centre in Scotland for the sale of tractors, farm implements and machinery with around 20 sales being held throughout the year, now on Thursdays.

The mart was originally established at a site within the town of Lanark, but the firm made the move out to Muirglen in 2004, although the original sale ring is still an iconic feature in the town.

The new agricultural centre was officially opened on 14th May 2004, having been built specifically for the purpose of contending with the rigours of modern day livestock auctioneering.

As well as Lanark, Lawrie and Symington also runs a market premise at Forfar, under the same senior management team.

Lanark is renowned for holding several important breed society sales each year and the centre at Lanark.

Another successful feature of the mart, although a separate business concern, is the Tinto View restaurant, part of Country Refreshments, run by owner Gilbert Thomson and his team. Open to the general public on sale and non-sale days, the restaurant and licensed bar are available to cater for non-market related events, something else the new centre is open for.
