BUMPER entries at the NPS Scotland Spring Show at SNEC saw classes run for more than 12 hours last weekend.

Lifting the overall supreme working hunter pony championship at the end of the day was the open champion, Kirsty Aird riding Winsome Aird's Falfield Beeleaf.

The eight-year-old home-bred Connemara mare is by Tiercel Woodman and out of Falfield Honeybee. One of the most consistent ponies on the circuit, they were champion at the Royal Highland Show, qualifying them for the Horse of the Year Show.

Their win in the open class qualified them for the Royal International Horse Show,

Judges David Balir and Tweetie Nimmo were unanimous, saying: "It was an easy winner and in a class of its own."

Reserve supreme and the open reserve was Sophie Conway and Caebryn Fashion. The 10-year-old Welsh section C was previously ridden by Sophie's younger sister Lydia in plaited classes.

Zara Weir and Longwaite Red Robin won the RIHS 122cm class. Last year they qualified for HOYS, being eighth after jumping clear, and although only 11.2hh, made nothing of the track as they are used to popping walls while moving sheep on her parents sheep farm in Dumfries-shire.

Kirsty also won the exceeding 143cm class, riding Nicola McLean's Connemara Gorgeous George, which has been purchased as a schoolmaster for her 11-year-old son Euan.

The intermediate working hunter pony champion was Haydon Hodgson with Cadlan Valley Picasso. A new ride this year, the 10-year-old Welsh Section B grey gelding was purchased in south Wales.

Judge Tweetie Nimmo said: "The champion was a really lovely, correct stamp of a pony that jumped a flowing round."

Reserve was Sarah Findlayson with the Welsh cob Fronarth Rio. This was their fourth win this year, the pony – owned by Cheryl Young – hunts with the Lauderdale.

Niamh Dobie won the novice working hunter pony championship with Landswood Diamond Dawn. The eight-year-old mare is by Lewlawrem Casanova and was champion at Stranraer and Dumfries last year.

Novice working hunter judge Liz Clayton said: "It went beautifully, moved well and really filled the eye."

Reserve was the 138cm class runner up Anri Class Act, ridden by Jodie Craig from Castle Douglas.

In the ridden classes it was Ashley Jubilation, owned and ridden by Vicky Campbell that was Peter Boustead's choice for the open championship. The eight-year-old mare by Willoway Double Gold and was purchased from the New Forest three years ago, and this year will be aimed at HOYS qualifiers.

"I had strong classes today," said Peter. "The champion had a lot of quality and was very much a pony. I liked the reserve as well, it was very good moving, especially in trot where it moved its hocks well."

This was Lauren Hunter riding Carol Smith's Oak Bronwyn. Lauren has been riding the six-year-old Welsh section C by Parvadean Replay for a year, they were champion at the Scottish All Welsh Show.

Rhinns Point Niall-A-Dendie won the novice ridden championship. Owned by Angela McLeod, the six-year-old Highland pony has been with Lynn Paisley for two seasons.

"The novice was nicely balanced, off its forehand with a good trot and canter," said judge Peter Boustead.

Tiffany Mactaggart rode Lynn Gregg's five-year-old gelding Kalewater Kings Seat to be reserve. Lynn, from Jedburgh, purchased the Connemara from Rhona Elliott as a yearling. A winner in-hand at the Royal Highland last season, it had a good season under saddle being supreme at Berwickshire, and champion at Glendale and Yarrow and Ettrick shows.

Reserve was Holly Stewart and the first ridden winner, Shamrocklake Shirley Temple.

In-hand supreme was the Smith family's home-bred Bracklinn Norah, a six-year-old Fell mare by the stud's Highland Show champion Carrock I'm Yer Man and out of Bracklinn Black Beauty. Norah had a foal in 2012 and also has been twice part of the Royal Highland St John's Wells championship.
