LADIES’ Day produced winners on the course and in the fashion stakes as it brought down the curtain on Kelso’s final fixture of the season on May 28.

Double Whammy landed the afternoon’s feature £20,000 handicap chase for Carrutherstown trainer, Iain Jardine.

He got the better of the consistent Ash Park – trained at Selkirk by Stuart Coltherd and ridden by son, Sam – in a rallying finish.

“Ash Park maybe got to the front too soon and our horse made use of his stamina,” said winning trainer, Iain Jardine.

“Double Whammy is an old horse with bad legs – he’s been plagued by tendon trouble – and he’s just outstayed the others. All credit to Ross (Chapman) as he’s given the horse a good ride,” he added.

Langholm trainer, James Ewart, saddled Lycidas to clinch the handicap hurdle race. The top-weight stormed home under Lucy Alexander to win a close-fought finish.

“The handicapper did get a hold of him but he’s come down to a more workable weight now,” explained the trainer’s wife, Briony. “This suits him well and this sort of ground is better for him.

“There’s a possibility he might go back on the Flat as he may as well keep going while the ground is suitable.”

Winning jockey, Lucy Alexander, shortly heads to France to spend a couple of months with champion trainer, Guillaume Macaire.

St Boswells owners, Paul and Clare Rooney, saw their colours carried to victory at Huntingdon on May 29, when Shotofwine won the conditional jockeys handicap hurdle race.

On the Flat, at Redcar, the same afternoon, Hawick jockey, Jason Hart, completed a double – riding Cornborough to a 7-1 win in the 1m 2f handicap, and Miss Tree to head the 1m 6f handicap.

Hawick jockey, Tom Hamilton, rode a winner in Ireland on May 26 when he brought home Mischievious Max to head the concluding two-mile flat race at Down Royal for Joseph O’Brien.

Carluke’s Keith Dalgleish enjoyed an across-the-card double the same afternoon. El Hombre, ridden by Hawick’s Rowan Scott, won the three-year-old sprint handicap at Haydock, while at Musselburgh Sebastian’s Wish made it three out of three since joining Ian’s Belstane Stables, in the open handicap.

Jim Goldie also had a winner at the East Lothian track, when Great Fighter headed the 1m 6 f handicap, making a winning return to the Flat after success over hurdles.

Irvine jockey, Danny Tudhope, had a double at Pontefract. He rode Mon Beau Visage to win the one-mile handicap, before partnering Mutadaffeq to take the 1m 4f handicap.

Two Hawick jockeys were in winning form at Catterick on May 25. Jason Hart rode Rebel Assault to head the five-furlong novice stakes, while Rowan Scott partnered Searanger to a 7-1 victory in the six-furlong selling stakes.

Glasgow handler Jim Goldie saddled two winners at Ayr on May 24. Goninodaethat scored first with a 14-1 victory in the six-furlong handicap, while stablemate Nicholas T justified favouritism to head the one-miler.

Chookie Dunedin posted a 10-1 win in the six-furlong novice stakes for Keith Dalgleish. The colt held on by a head to take the spoils.

Galston trainer Mike Smith saw Gworn win by a neck in the 1m 2f handicap at 8-1.

Hawick jockey Jamie Hamilton had a double at Hexham on May 23. First, he took Cape Hideaway to a 3-1 win in the handicap, before partnering Hattons Hill to head the three-mile novice.
