IAIN Jardine saddled a winner on Scottish National Day, at Ayr, last Saturday, when Cool Mix posted a comfortable success in the hands of Liam Quinlan in what was a fine spring day.

The grey justified favouritism, cruising home seven lengths clear in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle race. The Carrutherstown handler was the only Scottish trainer in the winner’s enclosure at the fixture.

The in-form trainer was quickly back in the top spot at Market Rasen the following afternoon. He saw L’Inganno Felice post a 2-1 victory in the opening two-mile maiden hurdle race on April 22. The winner carries the colours of Alec Dawson from Jedburgh and his daughter, Kate Campbell.

“He won well and he’s probably been a bit late coming to hurdling, he’s been a jumper in the making but he has been running so well on the Flat,” explained Iain. “We’ll see what sort of mark he gets and he could go summer jumping.”

He has his Hetland Hill stable in fine form and the success followed on in the all-weather four days earlier. Langholm jockey Jamie Gormley rode his charge, Hediddodinthe, to score in the opening two-mile handicap at Newcastle on April 19.

In first-time cheekpieces, the four-year-old, who also carries the colours of his Carrutherstown handler, powered home to record an impressive win.

Fellow Hawick-born trainer Keith Dalgleish sent Starplex from his Carluke base to win at Thirsk, on April 21. The 33-1 chance scored by a neck in the middle distance handicap under former Grand National-winning jockey, Graham Lee, now equally successful on the Flat.

Two Ayrshire jockeys were also in winning form the same afternoon. David Allan rode Vintage Brut to a 25-1 win in the opening five-furlong maiden stakes at Thirsk, while Danny Tudhope won the one-mile handicap at Nottingham on 10-1 chance Lamloom.

Hot on the heels of his Kelso victory the previous afternoon, Northumberland jockey, Harry Reed, was back in the winner’s enclosure at Carlisle, on April 17. He rode Strike It West to a 12-1 win in the opening conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle race.

The father and son team of George and Jonathon Bewley scored in the three-mile handicap chase with Onderun. The 7-1 chance carries the colours of Southdean Racing Club, where the Bewleys were previously based.

Jonathon Bewley also had a winner at Hexham on April 23, riding Chicago Outfit to a 40-1 victory in the three-mile handicao chase for Irvine trainer Leonard Kerr.

Langholm jockey, Dale Irving, rode Miss Mackie to win the two-mile handicap chase. The mare – having her first run in 227 days – was a credit to her Galston-based trainer, Mike Smith.

On the Flat, Hawick jockey, Jason Hart, won the opening five-furlong novice stakes at Pontefract on Carey Street.

Also, Northumberland trainer, Ann Hamilton, saddled Oak Vintage to win the two-mile handicap chase at Sedgefield, in the hands of Ross Chapman.

Harry Reed had his first ride for HM The Queen at Cheltenham, on April 18. He rode Her Majesty’s Forth Bridge to finish runner-up in the handicap hurdle race for conditional and amateur jockeys.
