HEAVY overnight rain made the rings for the NPS Scotland championship finals at Blair Castle Horse Trials deep and sticky going.

Champion of The Scottish Farmer/Scottish Horse mountain and moorland overall in-hand champion was the senior champion, Brian Hyslop's Welsh section A mare, Maxwelltown Moyen, shown by his daughter in-law Zoe Hyslop.

The 10-year-old mare is by Maxwelltown Moonshine and out of the champion mare Swinford Myfawny, and has already been champion at Stranraer and Dumfries this season.

Alan Bell, judging said: "The champion was a pony that really covered the ground and moves well, it was smart."

Unusually in the overall, the reserve championship sash went to the youngstock reserve, Kirsty Miller's Waxwing Maggie May, a two-year-old filly shown by daughter Morven.

"In the junior championship they messed up and broke its stride and I told the handler that – in the overall it ran out beautifully. I like to see ponies that move," said Mr Bell.

Maggie May most recently has been champion at Kinross before being reserve supreme, she was also reserve at Ayr and Fife. Later, she won the Kilmannan in-hand silver medal.

Junior champion was the Highland Show champion, the Fell Bracklinn Melissa from Gwen Rae. The three-year-old is by the champion Fell Carrock I'm Yer Man, and was also supreme at Cumbria Fell and Dales shows.

The senior reserve was Emma Gayler with the Fell, Orwins Tom Boy.

Highland ponies dominated the ridden sections. Champion of the Baileys open ridden and silver medal was Chris Grant with Dunedin Finale. The eight-year-old mare is by Muldoanich of Dalbrack, which was ridden reserve at the breed show and open ridden champion the previous day.

Reserve was Jo Jack with Elinor Steven's Glenbanchor Somerled. Ridden by Kirsty Aird in the class, Jo took over the ride in the championship as Kirsty had won the Connemara class with Falfiled Beeleaf. The seven-year-old gelding is a proper allrounder and won the private driving championship at the Highland Show with Elinor to qualify for HOYS.

"The Highland class was the strongest class and in the championship carried themselves better in the difficult going. We couldn't split them in the class but decided the mare suited the rider better," said judge, Allan Robertson.

In the Kilmannan Stud novice ridden final it was Heather Dick's Carlung Kylestrome that was Tom Barron's choice for the championship sash.

Champion of the novice section the previous day, Kylestrome is a seven-year-old gelding by Carlung Ebony and was purchased from breeder Susan Wardrop as a four-year-old. At the Highland Show he was fifth in the ridden class, and last year was first in the junior in-hand gelding class.

Reserve was Morgan Anderson riding her grandmother Lynda Mulholland's Exmoor Beinnliath Hartshornpike.

The Kilgraston School mini mountain and moorland championship took place in torrential rain. Champion was the Exmoor Beinnliath Hartshornpike

The 11-year-old gelding was reserve in-hand at the Highland Show, and mini ridden champion at BSPS Spring Show and supreme champion at Glenbrae. Most recently the pair went to Linlithgow and Stirlingshire pony club camp.

"It was a really lovely first ridden pony, it behaved well in the rain and did everything very nicely," said judge Robert Parker Jones.

Reserve was the lead rein winner, the Shetland pony Rosebestman of Transy, ridden by Heather Keron. Most recently they were supreme at the Central Scotland Shetland breed group show.

Working hunter ponies had their work cut out in the Castle Arena where clears were at a premium, with just one in the 122cm class and two in the not exceeding 138cm class.

Champion of the Kingfisher Building Products section was Becca MacMillan with the Welsh section C, Coathamdene Just Dylan. Becca and the seven-year-old hunt with the Lauderdale and made light of the deep ground conditions to jump clear.

Reserve was from the exceeding 138cm class, Katie Common with the Connemara mare Sile Na Gig, which was novice champion at NPS Spring and fourth in the HOYS qualifier at the Highland Show.

Champion of the NPS Scotland in-hand riding and hunter ponies section was Charlie Cousins with Kenilwood Hurricane, a two-year-old gelding by Mynach Arion which was supreme at Alyth and most recently had two firsts at Equifest.

"The champion just oozed quality, it's future top class ridden pony with elegance," said judge Tom Barron. "The reserve was a smart hunter pony, very workmanlike."

This was Susan and Perry Campbell's Northview Blitzen, a 10-year-old by Bureside Garnet which was winning its seventh championship this season.
