Highfield of Howe, in Fife, now boasts a fabulous outdoor arena with plenty of warm-up space, making it an attractive venue for competitors.
That was so much so that the jumping went on well into the evening at their recent one-day show.
Competing in warm, sunny weather in the final class of the day, the RHS B+C qualifier, two young men shared top spot.
Douglas Duffin has spent the beginning of this year travelling abroad and further afield with his team of horses, ranging from youngsters to his open horses, with all being in the money at various venues.
After Vejer De La Frontera, he more recently competed at Chepstow 2* where Quidam BZ and Eclips were in the money in the bigger classes.
Nearer home, he took Nicky Morgan’s lovely chestnut former HOYS foxhunter finalist, Djoel, out to tackle his first qualifier of the season, coming home joint winner with David Harland.
David was riding the grey Fauber, which now has two classes to contest thanks to picking up an amateur qualifier the previous weekend.
Declan Irvine just missed out with Mystic Independence in third, but had earlier found the key to Di Beaumont’s amateur qualifier track when he steered Keeford Carousel, a horse he and Richard Duncan have produced from his baby days to Grade A, to record the fastest double clear.
Sarah Gibb travelled from her Aberdeen base to slot into second place on her stunning, huge, coloured gelding, Ultimo Ashbank, which she has had since he was a youngster. With a big jump and even bigger stride, he covered the ground to just fall short of Declan’s time but still give her a qualifying ticket.
Falkirk’s Sanda Trenchard has hit form recently with wins at two Muirmill shows before coming to this venue.
Currently sitting in second place in the Bronze League before her win here in the 1m, Sanda bought her ride, Valasay – a daughter of the Tornado stallion, Hootcha Boy – when just broken being the second horse she’s had from the breeder, Hugh Paterson, of the Miami Stud, her other being the now retired Grade A Diamond Hills.
Lesley Paton was sidelined for a while with a broken shoulder but back out jumping and seen tackling he 1.2m tracks at Cabin last weekend she seems to be fully recovered.
Riding her own novice for the first time in the ring since her injury, she lost no time hitting form when heading a busy British novice on the big jumping Explosive III.
Craig Hamilton has been seen in the money with the former Heather Blackie ride CE Rocklands Cherry. This grey mare is quick against the clock and looked handy to win the 1.05m open at this show.
There was a good turnout at SNEC, near Broxburn, as per usual when riders headed to this popular venue to contest another couple of RHS qualifiers.
Absolutely over the moon was young rider, Lucy Stewart, who headed the Young Masters with her own Cancun.
Having had an amazing year with this horse, including winning a CWD saddle, winning in France, then qualifying for the RHS amateur at Cabin a few weeks ago.
Maintaining this form she flew round the 1.3m to win the class outright and earn her place in the Young Masters final finishing a second quicker than the only other double clear, Iain Warnock, on Harperland Mickey Finn.
Vicky Davidson settled for third with one pole on the floor with her Morris winner, Celtic.
Sonya Cunningham is more frequently seen out eventing as well as running her Rockrose Equestrian Centre, near Haddington.
Partnered with the Scottish-bred Dandyman MFS, formerly ridden by Stephen Lohoar, she looked perfectly at home skipping round to win a 1.2m open before the RHS amateur qualifier in which she posted the fastest of the three double clears staying a whole second in front of the nearest challenger Katrina Frew on her impressive 6yer old Glamore Boy H.
Scottish-based Irishman, Fintan Hunt, rode his nine-year-old grey, Broomhill Freddie, to win at both venues, scorching round a British novice at SNEC to stop the clock two seconds faster than anyone else.
Only two returned double clears in a 32-starter newcomers with Blyth Brewster on Gibsy claiming the red rosette.
Samantha Binnie was the only other to leave the fences standing with her own Floris IV to take home the blue rosette this time.
