Enjoying three rare dry, sunny days in a row The Cabin EC just outside Inverurie hosted two National Amateur Second round qualifiers for the Amateur finals held at Aintree in November.

Three riders collected their tickets from the 1.05m second round with just Tranent based Charlotte Mills coming out on top with the only double clear of the competition.

Her mount was the 15year old Belgian bred son of Quebec, Quadro which Charlotte bought from Jack McGeoch over 8years ago.

Winners of a 1.10m at Howe recently this pair didn’t touch a pole all weekend jumping three classes with this win seeing them take a ticket plus a £50 first prize for their efforts.

The Cabin is a happy hunting ground or Samantha Wiseman who won the points for her consistency at a previous show. This time with Fleur De Mai her time was over 12 seconds quicker than Charlotte but one pole on the floor dropped them into runner up spot.

The third qualifier was another partnership frequently in the awards at this venue, Caitlin Padfield on her own versatile George A who also fell foul of one pole in a slower time.

Sue Hendry’s 20year old Tomahawk is showing no signs of slowing down with a recent run of 7 wins only being ‘marred’ by a second place.

Only 148cms this coloured gelding is quick against the clock beating four other double clears to head the National Amateur 85cms second round qualifier.

Their time of 40.66 was far too fast for runner up Estelle Bain from Ellon on the unusually marked mare Chiricahua.

Estelle was also clear all the way on her other ride the 8year old FH Betty a former Scope finalist at this level.

Lucy O’Neill steered her own Estoril into third to qualify for the second year in a row.

Charlotte Mills collected her second ticket of the weekend in fourth this time on board the lovely four year old Saint Alizee mare Fifi Latina.

Three riders had a pole each in the jump off but also qualified, Megan Cowan with Tullycars Peek A Boo, Jennifer O’Neill with Chellijana Z and Jennifer McGregor with Heaven.

Also in top form over the show was young rider Lauren Forrest who has chosen to go onto horses early, she only turned 12 a few days after the show.

Partnered with Morgan Thompson’s former ride WKD Cosmopolitan and Lindsay Jeffries’ Cyrena Du Carel she was in the money in almost every class that she entered over the three days including winning a 95cms first round with the former and an 85cms with the latter giving more experienced seniors a run for their money.

Aberdeen’s Tracey Van Someren had an amazing weekend when her super reliable little bay gelding Becconsall Storm aka Teddy, who has just finished a very successful summer eventing showed his show jumping is just as handy when he scored a hat trick in the 1.05m classes

Over in the Borders at the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre an 85cms National Amateur second round drew the riders in with three returning double clears and taking the top prizes.

Regular visitor to Scotland, Richard Nichol was the quickest round the track with the 12year old grey gelding Arland H finishing over a second clear of runner up teenager Persia Bhatia on her 148cms Molly XIII who was also runner up in the Discovery the same day.

In third with the final double clear was 14year old Ben Fairbrother who suffered a major blow earlier in the season when he lost his top horse very suddenly.

The 14year old Winnie VII is starting to fill the void jumping consistently since joining Ben in August only a couple of seconds adrift of the leaders but still picking up his qualifying ticket.
