A leading Scottish chef was gifted time off and a delicious home cooked meal from her children this Mother’s Day, to say thanks for all the hard work she does for her family.

Enjoying a well-earned break from the kitchen and some quality time with her children, renowned chef and owner of The Sisters, Jak O’Donnell was served up the perfect steak pie by her kids who ditched the typical Mother’s Day gifts of chocolates and flowers to produce a delicious, home cooked meal for their Mum.

Using lean Scotch Beef PGI braising steak, Jemma and Fraser O’Donnell, aged 14 and 12, followed a recipe for the perfect steak pie that packs a flavourful punch with a rich gravy using Worcester sauce and a crisp, buttery pastry topping.

Jemma O’Donnell, daughter of Scottish Chef Jak O’Donnell, said: “Although we know our Mum loves to cook, it’s already been a very busy year for her so this Mother’s Day we wanted to let her sit down and let us look after her for a change. We decided to make her one of her favourite meals, using all of the skills she has taught us over the years.

“We love being in the kitchen with Mum as it’s where she is happiest, chatting to us and telling us about what she is making. We have learned a lot from her and we are really lucky to have such a good cook serving us up our dinner every night.

“Usually on Mother’s Day we give her a card and flowers or chocolates which she always enjoys. This year, to do something different, we wanted to give her something really special while spending quality time together.”

Jak O’Donnell, Chef Patron at The Sisters Restaurant in Glasgow: “It’s no secret that its mostly our mums that are often the ones thinking up, shopping for and cooking the delicious dinners we enjoy at mealtimes, family dinners and special occasions, so it’s so nice to be spoiled by our kids every now and then, especially when it includes a delicious, home cooked meal.

“Using Scotch Beef as the base of the dish is perfect for treating mums everywhere as it not only enhances the rich flavour of the pie, but also is a trusted and quality-assured ingredient that comes from selected Scottish farms that meet the most stringent standards of animal welfare and production methods.

“Whilst the traditional gifts I get for Mother’s Day every year are nice, there’s nothing I love more than having a little peace and quiet while the kids and rustling up a delicious meal for me and the tucking in to the delicious meal together. Even better if I don’t have to do the dishes!”

The perfect steak pie recipe is part of a selection of new recipes that support Quality Meat Scotland’s recently launched ‘Know Your Beef’ campaign which looks to champion the unsung heroes of the Scotch Beef industry and educate consumers about the quality, sustainability and welfare credentials of Scotch Beef.
