A husband and wife from the island of Mauritius have both graduated from SRUC with a Masters in Applied Poultry Science.
Ashveen Fakeer and his wife, Sarika, opted to study the course via distance learning because there were no specific postgraduate courses in the field of poultry science in their country.
Ashveen, who graduated with a Pass with Merit, was also awarded the Aviagen Prize for the best Master of Science student in Applied Poultry Science. The 40-year-old works as a farm manager at Montida Poultry, in Mauritius, and wanted to carry out further studies in poultry to improve his career options.
As a breeder manager at another Mauritius integrated broiler company, Innodis Poultryd, Sarika wanted to learn more about the technical details of poultry management. The 39-year-old, who had to juggle the demands of the course with her work and raising two young children, graduated with a pass.
She said: “I really appreciated the professionalism of the teachers. Although the course was delivered by online teaching, the lecturers were always present when needed and we had very good interactions during lectures. We also had the support of the programme team leaders for any issues.
“It was sometimes tough because we have two little kids, but I was able to manage with the help and support of my family.”
Ashveen added: “It was a very enriching experience overall.”
