IF YOU want to get married on a farming estate like no other then the Murthly Estate in Highland Perthshire is the one.

With its own two-mile drive, Murthly Estate can be found near Dunkeld and is a very exclusive wedding venue indeed. Set in extensive landscaped grounds, the estate comprises Murthly Castle, the 16th-century Chapel of St Anthony the Eremite, the Walled Garden and the Douglas fir avenue.

It’s a rural idyll where you will find peace and nature amid stunning scenery and beautiful surroundings. Managing director Thomas Steuart Fothringham says: “We’re looking forward to our first wedding in May. There will usually be about 12 weddings a year and we are proud to be one of the most exclusive wedding venues in Scotland.

“We do things a little differently here,” he continues. “When we hire our space, we give couples the freedom of choice to do what they want. We’re very flexible and don’t dictate so you can have a very original wedding at Murthly. With lots of space – our Walled Garden is two acres – there’s plenty of scope to do something really special.

“Having our own family chapel is also a big selling point for us. The castle was originally a tower house which was expanded over the next 400 years so we’ve a lot of history here. Our Douglas fir avenue is an extensive but quiet space, with some of the North-West Pacific trees 55 feet tall.”

Thomas continues: “Because we only have a small number of weddings a year it is very exclusive and I am the point of contact for you – you’re not dealing with lots of different people so it’s very, very personal. When you call, you’ll always get me – it’s quite an unusual point of difference but our couples appreciate it.

“It’s good to get to know our couples and it’s always a pleasure – many stay in touch years after their wedding day and a couple of years ago we have a couple return to Murthly to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Relationships extend way beyond the actual wedding day and we love being part of the journey.”

Allowing couples to have complete control over their big day is important to Thomas and his team. “While we work with local caterers, marquee providers, florists and other suppliers, ultimately it’s up to you – we’re here to help and ensuring you have what you want for your big day is what’s important to us.”
