PARAPHRASING William Morris, a Logan Whistle is the epitome of something ‘useful and beautiful’.
Crafted with precision, these whistles emit crisp, clear tones that dogs respond to effortlessly.
While many admire the full-sized Logan Whistles as works of art, sculpted from premium metals and often adorned with intricate engraved motifs, they have also inspired a unique range of whistle charm jewellery.
Joanne McHardy, owner of the family business founded by her father Harford Logan, in County Down, Northern Ireland, reflects on this evolution: “When we first began to travel to shows and competitions here in the UK and abroad, customers would ask us for charms to wear and to buy as gifts, so our jewellery range has grown from there.”
The journey began with the introduction of their purely decorative miniature whistle charm, available in sterling silver and 9ct gold.
“We designed it for fairies to use and for us to wear,” Joanne says.
Each charm is threaded on a sparkling diamond-cut trace chain, creating an elegant necklace that is lightweight, easy to wear, and perfect for gifting.
The enquiries didn’t stop there. “Then the questions began – does the whistle charm actually work?” Joanne recounts.
Inspired by this curiosity, they crafted the Minnie Logan, a larger charm whistle made from solid silver that delivers a genuine, functional sound. Named in honour of Joanne’s grandmother, Minnie, this mid-sized whistle is elegantly decorated and beautifully packaged, ready to be presented as a special gift.
For Joanne, achieving the Minnie Logan’s quality of sound has been as vital as its aesthetics. “Any functioning Logan Whistle has high standards to meet, so we worked with specialist jewellery makers in Birmingham, using the very latest silversmith techniques to craft the Minnie,” she explains.
“Both the miniature Logan Whistle charm and the Minnie Logan are dear to our hearts, and it delights us to imagine the smiles of those receiving them as gifts this Christmas,” Joanne adds, capturing the sense of joy that these unique jewellery items bring.
As the Christmas season approaches, the legacy of Logan Whistles continues to resonate, reminding us that something so charming can also serve a purpose.
