A high energy fat supplement is one of the key components of the bull ration that brought pedigree Limousin breeders Ian and Wendy Callion’s season to a head, when their bull, Lodge Puzzler, topped last month's breed sale at Carlisle, selling for 7500gns.

The bull from the couple's Limousin herd based at Bolfornought Farm, Stirling, follows a successful season selling bulls both through the live auction ring and privately off the farm.

Ian believes attention to detail, particularly with bull diets is crucial to this success, and has found the protected fat supplement Megajule from UFAC-UK, containing essential omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources, has been key.

“By feeding Megajule to rearing bulls, I find it helps the bulls to flesh and puts a good shiny coat on them,” Ian said.

“I am also able to reduce the starch content in the diet as the fat is high in energy, meaning bulls do not suffer from laminitis and are better on their feet.”

Fatty acids from the blend of specially selected vegetable and marine oils are more efficiently utilised than hard fats, therefore providing more effective energy for the animals. The omega-3 fatty acids also help with semen quality, so improving the ability of the bulls to get cows in calf.

“I believe in selling quality bulls, with regular customers happy to buy from me as they know the bulls perform well. Megajule is an excellent component of my bull ration to achieve and maintain this quality,” says Ian.

Megajule is available from UK manufacturer of energy, protein and omega-3 supplements, UFAC-UK.
