IT’S A bit of an unsung hero, but the SEAT Cupra Ateca is a pretty rapid little 4 x 4 which can do the 0-62mph timed run in just 5.2 seconds – take that Range Rover!
Its 2.0 TSI petrol engine hits 287bhp and puts it on the ground through a really excellent 4Drive seven-speed DSG gearbox. The stated average fuel economy is about 34 mpg, though actually it is a bit less than that and I struggled to get it much above 30mpg – mainly because I was enjoying driving it too much.
The test model came with the optional ‘Comfort and Sound’ pack which included a driving pack, plus space saver spare wheel and electric tailgate, meaning the total cost was £37,845.
So, what’s not to like about 19-inch alloy wheels, a distinctive body kit, a quad exhaust system and LED headlights? Not a lot.
It was a great drive, too, assisted by a pretty well set-up suspension system, which has been lowered and has the benefit of the driver being able to choose how it responds via its adjustable dampers.
If you want something different to the usual SUV, then the SEAT Cupra Ateca is well worth a look. It’s fast, distinctive and a well engineered wee star – and good enough to be named ‘Best Sportscar’ by Scottish motoring journalist in the Scottish Car of the Year awards ceremony in November.
