RSABI volunteers Gregor Caldwell and Andrew Leggate are about to embark on a 207-mile-long walk along the Southern Upland Way to raise funds for the charity, which provides emotional, practical and financial support to people in need across the agricultural sector.

Mr Caldwell, chair of the RSABI Volunteer Ayrshire Committee, explained: “I’ve been involved with farming all my life. Farming is such a unique way of life and many farmers battle on in silence not knowing where to seek help. The recent period of terrible weather simply compounds the struggles they face.

“RSABI plays a vital role in providing help and support in a non-judgemental manner. It is so important we all take some responsibility and look after those who have worked and continue to work in farming. Fundraising on behalf of RSABI allows me to put something back into the industry.”

Mr Caldwell will be joined by RSABI committee member Mr Leggate, to embark on their 207-mile walking challenge on Tuesday May 29, when they will leave Portpatrick on the Southwest coast and head towards Cocksburnpath on the Southeast coast.

RSABI development officer for the Southwest Jill Sloan said: “We invite individuals and groups from local businesses or clubs to get involved with this event which is headline sponsored by SP Energy Networks and route sponsor is Davidson and Robertson. We encourage everyone to walk with the rural community for the rural community."
