'Storm Callum’ has been forecast by the Met Office to bring heavy rain and strong winds to areas of the UK – including Scotland and Northern Ireland – over today (Friday) and into Saturday

Rural insurer NFU Mutual has warned people that the storm has the potential to cause flooding and consequent damage to homes, vehicles and businesses.

The Met Office forecast has announced an Amber warning for rain in South Wales, and a Yellow warning for both rain and wind in Northern Ireland and exposed coastal areas of South West England and Scotland.

The Mutual, which insures over 70% of UK farms and thousands of rural homes and businesses, is on standby to launch its emergency claims plan should serious floods occur.

“According to the Met Office warnings, there is a chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings," said company spokesperson Rebecca Davidson. "Those across Scotland are advised to take simple precautions and only travel if absolutely necessary as delays are likely.

“When extreme weather strikes our first priority is to get immediate help to people whose families and animals have been put at risk,” she added. “Our local claims teams and 300 local offices are on stand-by to provide immediate help to customers – including making immediate emergency payments."
