GILL JOHNSTONE has retired as NFU Scotland’s group secretary for Islay after almost 24 years, and has now handed over NFUS and Mutual duties at the Islay office to Garry MacLean.
In recognition of her tremendous service in representing union members, NFUS political affairs manager Clare Slipper has presented Gill with a token of the union’s appreciation. But Gill's not leaving NFUS just yet – at the Islay, Jura and Colonsay Branch AGM last week, she was appointed as the new branch chair person.
In tribute to Gill, union president Andrew McCornick said: “There has been no stronger advocate in highlighting how beautiful and productive Islay, Jura and Colonsay are and the challenges that their farmers and crofters regularly face. It is fantastic news that Gill’s knowledge and expertise will be retained as she moves from the secretary’s office to be branch chair.”
