The Scottish asparagus season kicked off this week at Myreside Farm, Inverkeilor, in Angus, where the McEwan family grow 15 acres of the crop. They chose to diversify into asparagus in 2017 to produce a niche product to sell direct to chefs and retail outlets. This is their second year of harvest and the yield has already doubled on the previous year. Their Angus asparagus is now highly sought after by top chefs, including Jamie Scott, of The Newport; Nick Nairn and Garry Watson, of Gordon's Restaurant; and they are also supplying many farm shops and greengrocers, including Balgove, Ardross and Gloagburn. Angus asparagus can also be found at local farmers' markets in Angus and Aberdeenshire and is available via farm gate sales too.
