ENGAGING IN early conversations around the topic of farming succession will be the focus of a special seminar this month delivered by experts from SAC Consulting.

‘Having early and honest conversations with family is vital in the farm succession process’ according to managing director of Saviour Associates, Heather Wildman, who will be delivering guidance to farmers on how to initiate discussions with family members in what can be a difficult process.

“For many people, knowing and talking openly about their hopes, dreams, fears and ideas can be daunting, or even terrifying,” explained Ms Wildman. “So, rather than being open and being honest within our families and businesses we hold back, bottle things up and just hope for the best.

“For many, this does come true but for others there can be a build-up of frustration, resentment which can then lead to a blow-up and fall out or depression,” she continued.

“When families start the conversation before there are health, money or other tensions we can see rationally and see things from other people’s perspectives. This opens up doors and opportunities. Plans can be made to accommodate and adapt and people have time to adjust,” she concluded.

The one-hour webinar is being put on by the Scottish Government’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) and will take place on Wednesday, July 17 at 7.30pm. To register your interest fill in the form here:- https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8560662693694368268
