A VISIT to Lanark Mart was top of the list of a 10-day tour of Lanark Presbytery by the moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev Colin Sinclair – where he endeavoured to discuss the different challenges facing the industry.

Ayrshire’s farming minister Rev Chris Blackshaw took the opportunity to explain some of the difficulties that farmers were currently facing, touching on poor prices, market volatility and the uncertainty of Brexit.

During the visit to Lawrie and Symington at Lanark, managing director Hamish McCall and events manager Willie McCulloch gave Rev Sinclair a guided tour around the mart and encouraged him to try his hand at auctioneering on the rostrum – where to everyone’s surprise he was quite a natural.

Leading on the example set by Ayrshire’s pioneering farming minister Mr Blackshaw, the moderator of the Lanark presbytery, Rev George Shand, spoke about how they are seriously considering introducing a similar post working out of Lanark Mart.
