OVER THE last 10 weeks, retailers have rationalised their ranges to increase volumes to keep up with consumer demand.

All retailers, excluding Tesco, have now reintroduced Scotch beef back on to their shelves, albeit Asda and Sainsbury in tiny volumes. Tesco has given an assurance that the Scotch brands will return when consumer demand stabilises.

The picture is different across the country in Tesco, with some stores 60%-70% Irish and some 80%-90% British. Their assurances would appear to be worthless.

In most cases Scotch branded products on shelf are not yet back to pre Covid levels.

Tesco

Scotch beef has disappeared from Tesco shelves. Customers want to support Scottish farmers but do not have the option to do so with products packaged as British.

Or, worse still, replaced with imports from Ireland, which is a cheaper product that doesn’t have the same quality assurance standards as Scotch. Pre Covid-19, Tesco were a very strong supporter of Scotch beef and lamb and we need to see them re-introduce Scotch products back to their previous levels.

Asda and Sainsbury

These retailers have a handful of Scotch products on shelves, but they really could and should be doing more to allow customers to support Scottish farmers. They haven’t for some considerable time.
