A COMMUNITY devastated by the flooding of a Lanarkshire nursery say they are "gobsmacked" after raising more than £4000 for repairs.

Families were heartbroken to discover Kidstore Childcare, in Kilsyth, had suffered "substantial damage" when heavy rain ravaged the site this week.

The nursery only reopened on Monday following months of work to prepare it to meet Covid-19 regulations.

It hasn't taken long for the town to dig deep to help the daycare in their hour of need, however, with a fundraising page smashing its £1000 target in less than 24 hours.

Lorna Harris, the chair of the parents committee, who set up the page, says she can't believe how generous people have been.

Glasgow Times:

Mrs Harris, 33, said: "We have just been gobsmacked by the support from everyone.

"People from Kilsyth and ever as far away as Canada have all contributed and the fundraiser has been shared all across Facebook.

"The nursery has had so many offered from local tradespeople to help with a rebuild and local businesses have also contributed. One gave us £200 just yesterday."

The flooding, which is understood to have happened when the nearby Ebroch Burn burst its banks on Monday, has devastated the nursery.

Glasgow Times:

Not only is the entire outdoor space, essential to allow for safe social distancing, covered in water, the entire inside of the building has also been ruined.

Mrs Harris, whose daughter Isobel, 3, attends the daycare centre, said: "We were all absolutely devastated when we found out it had happened.

"I can only speak for myself, but I had been looking forward to letting my daughter go back to nursery so she could get a wee bit of normality.

"I am also on maternity leave and was hoping to finally enjoy some one-to-one time with my four-month-old son Rueben."

A spokesperson for NLC said: “We’ve managed to find the nursery temporary accommodation at the Garrell Vale Community Centre and children will be able to attend there from this Wednesday.”
