NEW figures revealing that Scotland has delivered over 80% of all new tree planting across the UK – representing the second highest planting figure in nearly 20 years – have been welcomed by the SNP.
The research found that a total of 10,860 hectares of new woodland were planted, adding up to a staggering 22 million trees planted in Scotland last year.
Commenting, the SNP's shadow Defra spokesperson at Westminster, Deidre Brock MP, said: “The new statistics highlighting that Scotland has delivered over 80% of all new tree planting across the UK are very welcome, and demonstrate Scotland’s commitment to tackling climate change in any way we can.
“With over 10,000 hectares of new woodland planted, Scotland has shown a determination in doing all it can and more in the fight against climate change.
“They also show how Scotland continues to lead the way in the UK on planting trees and in the future, this needs to be reflected in the funding being provided for this vital activity from the UK government,” suggested Ms Brock.
“Despite the challenges, we should welcome the figures which represent the second highest planting figure in nearly 20 years. It is vital that we continue to take the proportionate steps to build on these efforts and on Scotland's success."
