As The SF went to print this week, Ian Stevenson was hoping to complete his 66th harvest at Blackburn, Lauder.

Ian, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, left school in 1954 and has driven the binder and subsequent combines at Blackburn every year since. His current 'steed' is a 1989 Claas Dominator 108, which is a mere youngster by comparison.

He described his 2020 harvest as very good, but wet weather in late September and October meant that the final field of barley, undersown with grass, had to wait until the first frosts in November to meet the combine knife.

Ten of the 14 acres were cut last week, with four still to do. Blackburn has been farmed by Ian’s family for almost 120 years.
