Scottish exhibitors were at the fore for the prestigious inter-breed beef championship at the Great Yorkshire Show with a massive Charolais bull from Aberdeenshire-based AJR Farms, Ellon, leading a cracking line up of champions.

Going one better than his reserve continental inter-breed award at the Royal Highland Showcase, last month, was the senior bull, Maerdy Morwr, shown by Andrew Reid and his son, also Andrew.

“He is a real heavy bull with a great body and a tremendous back of beef on him. He showed good locomotion throughout,” said inter-breed judge, George Young of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.

This five-year-old stock bull was purchased privately three years ago from Esmor Evans, Wales, for £25,000, and is a son of Maerdy Dynamite, out of Maerdy Fee.

The native inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland Showcase, went on to take reserve inter-breed at Harrogate, for Tom and Di Harrison, Northumberland. This was the three-year-old Hereford bull, Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks.

Mr Young added: “This is another damn good bull with plenty of power, showing strong characteristics of the breed. There was very little between my top two.”

The Hereford bull is a son of the 2019 Hereford Sire of the Year, the Danish-bred sire, SMH Kingsize, out of the Scottish-bred cow, Romany 1 Dawn. Rebel Kicks has also been used extensively at home.

There was more success to come for the same two breeds in the inter-breed pairs competitions with the Continental pairs title won by the Charolais supreme winner Maerdy Morwr, accompanied by the reserve champion, Harestone Mamma Mia from the Barclay family from Insch, Aberdeenshire.

The Blythewood native pairs was won by a Hereford duo comprising the champion, Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks, and the female best Coley 1 Nova, shown by Andrew Dews.

Aberdeen-Angus

The two-year-old heifer, Weeton Blackbird from Richard Hassall and Rachael Wyllie, of Brailes Livestock, took the lead among the Aberdeen-Angus, with Perthshire’s freelance stockmen, Richard and Carol Rettie at the end of the halter.

Having stood breed champion at this year’s Royal Highland Showcase event, this youngster is a daughter of Rawburn Boss Hogg, and was bought for 3800gns at the Weeton herd dispersal. She was paraded due to Brailes Fabulous.

Northumberland breeder, Dallas Allen, Alnwick, landed the reserve with a cow and calf outfit from the family farm.

Their four-year-old cow, Stouphill Lady Rose is sired by Weeton Diamond Mine and out of Rawburn Lady Rose, which has bred calves to 12,000gns. The February-born calf, also Lady Rose is by Logie Defiance.

Beef Shorthorn

The Royal Highland Showcase Beef Shorthorn champion went on to secure the same award down at Harrogate for Alan Jackson and his partner, Senga Hamilton of the Headlind herd, near Lanark.

Taking the tri-colour for them was Dunsyre Horatio, a seven-year-old bred by Lanarkshire breeder, Carey Coombs. He is by the 12,000gns 2010 sale topper, Langalbuinoch Barney, and had been working on a commercial farm before being sold to Alan and Senga.

The 16-month-old heifer, Highlee Precious Enya, from Mark and Tracy Severn from Halifax, took the blue and white sash. Their home-bred heifer is a daughter of Millerston Jester and out of Highlee Karamel.

Blonde

Thor Atkinson, Newlands, Cumbria, again took the top spot amongst the Blondes with his five-year-old cow, Blackwater Maple, and heifer calf, Santana, shown by freelance stockman, Duncan McLaren.

Champion at last month’s Royal Highland Showcase Maple is a daughter of Blackwater Heston and out of Blackwater April.

Rosebank Peppa Pig lifted the reserve honours for Barry Allsop, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. His 27-month-old heifer was bought in Derbyshire, and is by Burdore Jim-Bob. She was shown two months in calf.

British Blue

Dumfries-shire breeder, Kevin Watret, Annan, had a field day amongst the British Blues winning the supreme with the yearling heifer, Solway View Pearl.

Champion at the Royal Highland Showcase and brought out by stockman, Ali Jackson, she is by the AI sire Dodou De St Remacle and bred from a top show winning family that was breed champion here in 2019, while the grand dam did the treble, winning the Highland, Great Yorkshire and the Welsh Shows, in 2013.

After winning the Blonde championship, Thor Atkinson, Newlands, had to settle for the reserve, with his home-bred 19-month-old heifer, Arradfoot Petra, which stood junior inter-breed at Devon Show and reserve breed champion at the Royal Highland Showcase. This embryo heifer calf is by Langoureux De Fooz and bred from Croftends Khole.

Charolais

Charolais best and supreme inter-breed beef champion was the senior bull, Maerdy Morwr from AJR Farms, Ellon.

Reserve continental inter-breed champion at the Royal Highland Showcase, this big five-year-old was purchased privately from Esmor Evans, for £25,000 three years ago and was brought out by father and son duo, both, Andrew Reid.

He is a son of Maerdy Dynamite out of Maerdy Fee.

Settling for reserve was Harestone Mamma Mia from the Barclay family’s herd from Insch, Aberdeenshire. Their five-year-old cow which landed the same award at the Royal Highland in 2019, is by Maerdy Dublin and out of Harestone Brigitte. She was brought out by stockmen, Robert Marshall and Jamie Clark, and was paraded in calf to Goldies Oasis.

Hereford

The impressive bull, Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks, from Tom and Di Harrison, from Northumberland, was not only the standout winner in the Hereford section but also reserve overall in the prestigious inter-breed beef competition.

Also champion at the Royal Highland Showcase, this home-bred three-year-old is a son of the 2019 Hereford Sire of the Year, SMH Kingsize, out of Romany 1 Dawn and has been used extensively at home on the couple’s 40-cow herd.

Taking the blue and white sash was the September 2020-born bull calf, Coley-1-Vincent from Heather Whittaker, Halifax, and farm manager, Andrew Huges. This youngster is a son of Fabb 1 Northern Star and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess.

Galloway

Scottish breeders were again in the running amongst the Galloways, with the Finlay family, from Blackcraig, Corsock, landing the supreme.

Their show stopper was the rising three-year-old heifer, Blackcraig Blondgen, a daughter of Blackcraig Xtreme, out of Blondgen 3 of Auchenhay. She was paraded in calf to Blackcraig Yahoo.

Dumfriesshire breeder, David Cornthwaite, Lockerbie, was awarded the blue and white sash for his female, Phoebe of Balgray, which also went on to win the junior inter-breed. She is by Troloss Impeccable, which has bred bulls to 16,000gns, and previously stood junior champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2019.

Belted Galloway

There was a double victory among the Belted Galloways for Anne Bell from Clifton, Southwick, Dumfries, when she secured both the champion and reserve tickets.

Supreme was the 22-month-old heifer, Cliffton Josie which was on her first outing, being a daughter of Clifton Darwin and out of Mochrum Jadee, the breed leader at the Royal Highland Show in 2009.

Clifton Kemila secured the reserve spot. Another daughter of Clifton Hercules, which has bred many champions, she is out of Broadmeadow Amy. Her full brother was champion at the breed sale at Castle Douglas last year before selling for the top price of 8000gns.

Highland

Bonnymeg of Moorside, a cow shown with calf at foot, secured the championship among the Highland cattle for Robert and Dianne Bradley, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

This six-year-old is a daughter of Zues of Glenkinglass, out of Ishtar 1 of Moorside and was brought out with the help of stockman, Tom Kitching.

Sineag Dubh of Seam secured the reserve honours for Simon and Emma Haley, Eggleston, Co Durham. This January 2019-born heifer is a daughter of Proiseil Dubh f Armun, and out of Sineag Dubh 3 of Brunilla, which was imported from Finland. She was bought in with her dam from Rikka Palonean.

Limousin

Whinfellpark Lupin was crowned the champion among the Limousins for the Jenkinson’s Whinfellpark herd from Clifton Moor, Penrith.

Whinfellpark Lupin is a Dolcorsllwyn Fabio daughter and was paraded with her November-born heifer calf at foot, Whinfellpark Rizzo, by the French bull, Nathan.

Foxhillfarm Primadonna was reserve for Anthony Renton, of the Meadowrig herd from Duns. This June 2019-born heifer was brought out by stockman Alistair Cormack, having been bought last August for 19,000gns. She is by Ampertaine Gigolo and out of the successful show female, Foxhillfarm Mammamia – a daughter of the 125,000gns Glenrock Illusion.

Lincoln Red

Yarnhill Oked was given the winning slap among the Lincoln Reds for Chris Page from Brough, East Yorkshire.

His three½-year-old cow is by Beverley Recall, and was paraded with her heifer calf at foot, Fouliness Oked, which is by Brackhers Wiseguy.

The long travel from Cornwall was also well worth it for Rob and Sue Grace, Bodmin, when they bagged the reserve ticket with the August 2019-born heifer, Trehudreth Julie Y524.

This home-bred heifer was on her first outing, and is a daughter of Beverley Regent, out of Trehudreth Julie V336.

Salers

The stylish red polled yearling heifer, Gentons Pasha from Bertrand Facon, Banbury, Oxon, walked her way to the championship.

The January 2020-born entry is by the French bull, Icare and out of a French dam, Gertude.

Runner-up was Approach Farm Pepin from Angus Gowthorpe, York. This February 2020-born bull is by the French bull, Beguin and out of the home-bred cow, Approach Farm Libby.

Simmental

There was a double victory among the Simmentals for David and Lesley Sapsed, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, when they secured both the champion and reserve honours for their 100-cow herd.

The top spot was awarded to the April 2019-born heifer, Heathbrow Koko Star, a daughter of Scotland Hill Cairo, out of Heathbrow Emerald Star Ex90. She is due to Heathbrow Important, which stood inter-breed champion here in 2019.

Settling for the blue and white ticket was Heathbrow Lavender, a January 2020-born heifer by Heathbrow Important, out of Heathbrow Ivory.

South Devon

Another trophy heading north of the Border to Dumfries with David Irving, was the championship from the South Devons, Enterprise Chephira, a three½-year-old cow.

She is a daughter of Malthouse Hurricane, out of Enterprise Cher Ex91 which goes back to a former female champion here..

The two½-year-old bull, Brafferton Winston 28, from Paul Harrison from York, was awarded the reserve title. He is a son of Brafferton Winstone 1, which has been used in the 50-cow herd for 12 years and out of Brafferton Stella 37 – another well established cow family back home.

Commercial cattle

A heifer bred in Scotland by Brian Harper of Greenwell, Falkirk, landed the supreme amongst a strong show of commercial cattle.

Miss Dynamite, an 11-month-old Limousin cross heifer Mark Harryman and Sarah Warriner from, Pickering, North Yorkshire, was on her first outing, and secured a second section championship for Mark who won the same award here in 2019.

Reserve was the steer, Blackjack from Craig Benley and Rachel Mudd, from Thirsk. This May-born was purchased at Carlisle from Andrew Harrison, The Grange for £2000, and is set for the winter shows if Covid-19 allows. This Limousin cross is sired by a home-bred bull by Noble Madness, and out of a Limousin cross British Blue show cow.
