Carlisle

A Limousin heifer led the way at Harrison and Hetherington's sale selling for the top price of £1780 for Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle, whilst steers reached £1750 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Storey, Limestone Cottage, Penrith.

The champion at the pre-sale show was a Limousin steer from Messrs Slack, Plumtree House, Penrith, which later realised £1720. The same home also bagged the blue and white sash which made £1520.

The 359 calves, sold to £615 for a Limousin bull from FG and SM Lough, South House, Hexham, with dairy calves peaking at £260 for Fleckvieh bulls from Burthwaite, Carlisle.

Top price at the late August sale of 1206 breeding ewes and rams, was £300 for Texel gimmers from Messrs Hastings, Kincroft.

Heifers levelled at 219.51p with prices peaking at 254.30p for a 346kg cross from East Balscalloch or £1675 for a 688kg Limousin cross from Nether Dalkeith.

The 103 OTM cattle reached 217.60p for a Salers cross from Ashfield or £1670 for a Charolais cross from Ardtornish, to average 161.36p, whilst dairy types balanced out at 121.18p having sold to 176.40p for a Holstein Friesian cross from Holms of Caaf, or £1170 for more of the same from Wester Boreland.

Rearing cattle reached £740 for Charolais stirks from Messrs Mitchell, Ardtornish.

Some 144 adult breeding cattle were sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts, where 41 cows with bull calves averaged £2059.07 having sold to £2950 for a Limousin cross cow with Limousin cross calf from Waterside, Forbes.

Cows with heifer calves cashed in at £1858.82 and peaked at £2450 for a British Blue cross cows with Limousin cross heifer calf, again from Waterside.

Newbigging led the heifers at £1800 for a Limousin cross heifer with Limousin bull calf, to level at £1707.50, and £2100 for a Limousin cross heifer with Limousin heifer calf, to balance out at £1787.50.

Limousin crosses also topped the in-calf heifers with 10 averaging £1634, from a top price of £1950 from Waterside, while in-calf cattle cashed in at £1403.88 having sold to £1850 for a British Blue from Davidson Farms, Crichie.

Breeding bulls were topped at 2100gns for a Limousin from Achentoul Farms, Kinbrace.
