Just shy of 5000 breeding sheep went under the hammer at Mitchells Auction Mart's annual two-day show and sale, where a Beltex cross Texel shearling ram secured the championship and sold for the top price of £1300 for M and C Wharton, Somerfield House, Thursby.

Reserve honours went to a Texel ram lamb from G Reed, Orchard House, which made £1000.

Champion amongst the Mules was a pen from J and D Mattinson, Cragg, Eaglesfield, which later realised £255 per head, with the overall average cashing in at £162.06.
