At Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store cattle sale, a total of 420 head were forward, with the bullock trade topping at £1640 on two occasions, firstly for a Charolais cross from Messrs Udale, Sideway Bank, Penrith and also for a Limousin cross from Messrs Swan, Mid Locharwoods, Dumfries.

Heifers witnessed a top price of £1460 paid for a Limousin cross from Messrs Grice, Newtown.

Natives sold to £1470 for Herefords from Messrs Spedding, Stoneflatts, while Holstein made £1395 from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.

Among the weaned cattle, bulls peaked at £1190 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Ashley, Laitha Farm, Bolton, whilst clean cattle witnessed Messrs Rutter, Fartown, Alston dominating at £1395 for a Limousin steer.

Aberdeen and Northern Marts had forward 957 store cattle at their anniversary show and sale, where judge, Arnott Coghill, Skinnet, Halkirk found his champion in the form of a 604kg Simmental cross bullock from W Barnetson and Sons, Lynegar, Watten, which later sold for £1500.

Reserve honours was awarded to a 669kg Charolais cross bullock from A and W Campbell, 5 West Murkle, Thurso, which was knocked down to £1540 also to Backmuir Livestock.

In the sale of bullocks, trade averaged 233.8p having sold to 261.3p for a pen of 331kg Limousin crosses from from Spittal Mains and £1645 for a 745kg Limousin cross from DA Budge, Brae Edge.

Heifers balanced out at 229.6p and peaked at 257.6p for a pen of 458kg Limousin crosses from Glengolly Farm, Thurso and £1480 for a 576kg Simmental cross from 5 West Murkle.

Among the Aberdeen Angus and native bred bullocks, prices peaked at 245.3p for a pen of 428kg from Achscrabster and £1390 for a 674kg from 5 Upper Dounreay, to average 221.4p, whilst heifers made 262.9p for a pen of 388kg from Backlass, Watten and £1100 for a pen of 477kg from The Crofts, North Watten, to cash in at 219.2p.

Out with the show, bullocks topped at £1640 for a Charolais from by AW Campbell, Bullenie, while a Charolais also dominated the heifers from Lynegar at £1400.

Caledonian Marts held their September show and sale of 361 store cattle and suckled calves, where judge for the day, Kevin Orr, Penston Farm, East Lothian,who awarded D Walker and Sons, Camreggan both the champion and reserve tickets for their 515kg Limousin bullock and 455kg Limousin bullock respectively.

The champion was knocked down to £1480, while the reserve bullock attained £1460.

Out with the show, bullocks averaged 218p having sold to 255p for a pen of Limousins from Cuthelton Farm, Denny and to £1440 for a pen of Aberdeen Angus' from W and C Pickard, Ormiston, Newburgh.

Among the heifers, trade levelled at 208p and peaked at 240p for a pen of Limousins from Hume of Overton, Denny or £1190 for a Limousin from McBeath and Jessop, Lower Greenyards, Stirling.

A top of 210p and £1020 was paid in the sale of Black and Whites from West Kirkland, Newton Stewart, to balance out at 166p.
