With damp and drizzly conditions failing to prevent exhibitors from making their way to Strathaven Agricultural Exposition, a top quality line-up of stock were out in force at Moffat Show, which saw particularly strong numbers in the sheep lines.

A Scotch Mule gimmer from Alan McLarty, Shawhead, Lanark, took the inter-breed sheep title in a strong class of sheep. On her second outing, having previously stood champion at East Kilbride Show, last month, she is by a home-bred son of a 3500gns Blarnavaid ram and out of a home-bred ewe.

Standing as overall in the cattle lines was the British Blue heifer and continental champion, Solway View Pure Class, from Jim Hamilton, Mid Shawtonhill, Chapelton. Having been privately purchased from Kevin Watret in February, this March, 2020-born heifer is a daughter of Gitan du Pti’t Mayeur and out of Bringlee Evadine.

Local exhibitors and owners of the Overside herd, Hugh and Andrew Neilson, from East Brackenridge, Strathaven scooped top honours among the dairy cattle with their heifer in milk, Berryholme Secretariat Flo VG87. Purchased privately as a calf, in 2019, she is a daughter of All Nure Secretariat and out of Berryholme Doorman Flo Ex 93.

Robin and Amanda Stewart's four-year-old mare, Mollinhillhead Lady Elegance, was supreme Clydesdales. From Mollinhillhead, Cumbernauld, she's only on her second outing and is by Bratlach Ballintoy and out of Mollinhillhead Lady Marion. She also found herself as victor in the yeld mare class at this year's Royal Highland Showcase.

Reserve – Collessie Alanna, from the Black family, Newton of Collessie, Cupar. This yearling filly is by Arradoul Balvenie, out of Roughlands Jasmine and was champion at this year's Kinross Show.

Dairy (Judge: L Fleming, Craigthorn, Glassford). Champion – The heifer in milk, Berryholme Secretariat Flo VG87, from H and A Neilson, East Brackenridge, Strathaven. Sired by All Nure Secretariat and out of Berryholme Doorman Flo Ex 93, she was purchased privately as a calf in 2019. Reserve – JD Baillie, Over Dalserf, Ashgill. with his cow in milk.

Continental cattle (Judge: C Hamilton, Allanton, Darvel). Champion and inter-breed cattle – The British Blue heifer, Solway View Pure Class, from J Hamilton, Mid Shawtonhill, Chapelton. This March, 2020-born heifer is a daughter of Gitan du Pti’t Mayeur and out of Bringlee Evadine. Reserve – A Lindsay's four-year-old Limousin cow and calf, from Kepscaith. On her first outing, she is sired by the imported Ionesco and out of a home-bred cow.

Commercial cattle (Judge: C Hamilton). Champion – Cumnock-based exhibitors, S and A Stevenson's October-born Limousin cross heifer. Having stood first in her class at Muirkirk, she is a daughter of Kinniside Moby Dick and out of the show cow, Coco Channel, which was first at the Agri Expo in 2018. Reserve – The Stevensons' Limousin cross bullock, also by Moby Dick, is January-born out of a home-bred Limousin cross British Blue cow and stood champion bullock at this year's Muirkirk Show.

Native cattle (Judge: C Hamilton). Champion – The three-year-old Belted Galloway, Brightonflatt Georgia, from E and S Hair, Biggar. Shown with her six-month-old heifer calf at foot – which is a daughter of Coulmony Kevin – Georgia is by Coulmony Ronald and out of Castlefield Greta. She was purchased as one of the foundation females at Castle Douglas, in 2019. Reserve – The 17-month-old bullock, Drumboy Tiesto, from G Dunbar, Drumclog. Sired by Venture Nighttime, he is out of the home-bred Drumboy Rosie and is on his first outing. Tiesto is booked in for the Hereford sale at Shrewsbury, next month.

Scotch Mule (Judge: M Dunlop, Upper Wellwood, Muirkirk). Champion and inter-breed sheep – A McLarty, Shawhead, Lanark, with his gimmer that stood champion at East Kilbride. On her second outing, she is by a home-bred son of a 3500gns Blarnavaid ram and out of a home-bred ewe. Reserve – A MacLarty's ewe lamb that won her class at East Kilbride, by a home-bred son of a £3000 Blarnavaid and out of a home-bred ewe.

Blackface (Judge: M Dunlop). Champion – M Robertson showing on behalf of Mrs M Rorison, Clonrae, the winner was a one-crop ewe purchased privately at a ewe lamb from Auldhouseburn, in 2019. She is by the £160,000 Elmscleugh and out of an Auldhouseburn ewe. Reserve – DC and JJ Marshall's shearling ram from Gosland, Biggar. A son of a £6500 Auldhouseburn bought at Stirling, last year, he is out of a £90,000 Dalchirla-sired ewe.

Continental sheep (Judge: B Gray, Sornbeg, Galston). Champion – The Hamilton family's Texel ewe lamb, from High Crewburn. On her first outing, she is a daughter of Peneil Dark Star, purchased at Lanark, last year, and out of a Courthill Comet-sired ewe. Reserve – A Texel ram lamb from the Hamiltons. He was purchased earlier this year off Crailloch, at Lanark.

Native sheep (Judge: J Fleming, Hallhill, Crossford). Champion – D Hodge and J Sloan's South Country Cheviot gimmer, from Boreland Mains. On her first outing, she was purchased as a ewe lamb at Longtown, last year, from Upper Hindhope. Reserve – A four-shear pure-bred Suffolk ewe from Sandford Sheep Company, Sandford. On her first outing, she was bred by William Shearer, Burnbrae.
