A potential ninth generation Excellent-classified heifer from J Burrows and Son's Stardale herd from Broughton, Preston, sold for the lead price of 2800gns at Harrison and Hetherington's Pedigree Dairy Day sale, at Carlisle.

The sale, which included entries from the Border and Lakeland Holstein Club and two dispersals – Woodend Holsteins and the Nethertown Ayrshire herd – was topped by Stardale Altar Roxy, a fresh heifer by Peak Altar8 bred from the Ex92 SP cow, Stardale Dreams Roxy which is a grand-daughter of the Ex95-7E SP LP120 65* cow, Stardale Leader Roxy. She sold to Messrs Townley, Lancaster.

The Burrows also sold the reserve champion, Stardale Bouncer August, a Delta Bouncer daughter bred from 10 generations of Ex or VG cows going back to DRA August. She sold for 2200gns, to the Forsyths based at Baltier, Whithorn, Newton Stewart. Stardale sold seven heifers to average £2003.

Three lots sold for 2500gns all of which were from the dispersal of JN Todhunter's Woodend herd from Keswick.

First was Woodend Dalliance Pat 17, a four-year-old which sold fresh in her third, purchased by the pre-sale judge, Jim Brown of the Catcraig herd from Craigie, Kilmarnock. She is by Wilder Dalliance and out of the Ex90 Woodend Trigger Pat 16.

Woodend Silver Rebecca 26 VG83-3yr followed and made the same money when selling to Messrs Sewell, Greysouthen, Cockermouth. Bred from six generations of VG or Ex dams, she is out of the Ex93-2E SP cow, Woodend ST Rebecca 23.

The same buyers also bought the third lot at 2500gns, an in-calf heifer. Woodend Lineman Eyes 40 VG85-2yr, by Comestar Lineman is bred from four consecutive generations of Ex dams.

Just behind, on 2300gns, the Forsyths from Baltier, bought the previous lot, Woodend Achieve Irene, a freshly calved heifer by Glamour Achieve, out of the Ex91 SP cow, Woodend Lb Irene.

The champion, Espland Crackshot Maisie, which formed part of the Cannon family's Espland dispersal from Appleby, made 2200gns to Mr Stonehouse from Yorkshire. Espland sold 12 cows and heifers to average almost £1900.

The first sale to disperse the Jones family's Nethertown Ayrshire herd for Dumfries was topped at 1700gns on four occasions to average £1163. These cows and heifers were mainly summer calved animals going back to well-bred Ayrshire families.
