The largest sale of Herdwick sheep in the country at Cockermouth, saw females sell to £480 and rams to £10,000.

The two-day show and sale saw a two-shear ram from AE and LK Harrison, Taw House, Eskdale, top the trade on the second day when selling to Messrs Whittle, while the champion, a shearling ram from WS Jackson, Nook Farm, made 6000gns.

The same home also produced the best aged ram which sold for 9000gns.

The first day of females saw judge Ian Grisedale of Green Mount, Milnthrope, award the championship to a pen of five ewes from WS Jackson, Nook Farm, Borrowdale, which went on to sell for £300 per head.

Reserve was a pen of gimmers from S Stobart, Howbeck Lodge, Hesket New Market that sold for £400.

Top price amongst the females was £480 paid for five gimmers from A Hartley, Turner Hall, Seathwaite, whose consignment of 25 averaged £372.

The 228 Cheviot and continental-bred rams sold to £750 for a Texel ram lamb from Messrs Stockdale, Crosshow, Dearham, with shearlings to £700 for a Texel from KG Holliday, Strudda Bank, Calderbridge.
