THE Lower and Upper Castle fishings on the River Deveron in Aberdeenshire, renowned as a first class salmon river, are up for sale.

The fishings stretch for two miles, providing both single and double bank fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout, set amidst glorious Aberdeenshire scenery. The catch records show a five-year average to 2019 of 23.4 salmon/18.2 sea trout per season.

Christian Wroe of Galbraith, who is handling the sale, said: “This is a rare opportunity to acquire a superb fishery, offering varied and some very challenging fishing with 28 named pools. The Deveron has a well-deserved reputation as a top class salmon river with runs of spring, summer and often prolific runs of autumn salmon through to season’s end. The Lower Castle beat accommodates four rods over approximately 1.25 miles of double bank fishing with 21 named pools. This water offers a number of deep holding pools as well as fast streamy water with many easily accessible pools and all productive in the right water conditions.

The River Bogie joins the River Deveron at the Meeting Pot and lower down a boat may be used to fish Forsyth Pool to its best. The upper section of this beat has some gorge features which although challenging can reward the adventurous angler.

The Upper Castle beat accommodates two rods over approximately 0.75 miles of single bank fishing with seven named pools. In recent times, this beat has been under fished yet offers some good holding pools and some challenging fishing due to its wild nature. The water is of modest width and is easily waded, or fished from the bank.

The River Deveron has an overall catchment area of 1266km2 and a length of 96kms (61 miles) from source to sea. The Deveron salmon and sea trout season officially opens on February 11, and closes on October 31, and the brown trout season runs from March 15, to October 6.

The Deveron has the fifth highest salmon and sea trout rod catch in Scotland and currently holds the record for the heaviest UK fly-caught salmon, weighing 61lbs (27.6kg).

Lower and Upper Castle Fishings are situated amongst beautiful and quiet countryside. Access is excellent, with Huntly approximately two miles away by road. Huntly provides a wide range of local facilities whilst Aberdeen with its airport lies approximately 40 miles south east.
