Prior to a recording breaking female sale, Neil and Graham Massie, of Blelack, Dinnet, also produced the majority of top prices among the Aberdeen-Angus bulls when selling to a top of 24,000gns for their male champion, Blelack Prince Cartier.

That also helped leverage the averages up again on the year for the 42 bulls sold, cashing in at a level of £6413 – which was £1362 ahead of last year for two more. There was a 68% clearance rate.

Sale leader was an April, 2020-born bull out of the first crop of sons sired by Blelack Dual Mine and also out of the heifer, Blelack Princess Caroline, which is sired by Weeton Evolution. Taking this top priced bull home to work was father and son duo, Alistair and Graham Fraser, Newton of Idvies, Forfar.

Next best, at 17,000gns was Blelack Bright Lad, when Henry Duncan, Whitehall Farms, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, placed the final bid. This March, 2020-born bull is result of Tonley Jester Eric on to the Blelack Evolution daughter, Blelack Beautiful Lady.

Another Dual Mine son achieved 11,000gns for the same home when leaving the ring with David Strachan, East Shawtonhill Farm, Chapelton, Strathaven.

His buy was a similarly aged bull, Blelack Kasper, which stood reserve male champion and junior champion in the pre-sale show. He is the first calf out of Blelack Karisma, which goes back to Haymount Walarlo.

Last to achieve the five-figure mark for this home, at 10,500gns, was Blelack Earthquake when knocked down to Seafield Pedigrees, Attwell Farm, Seafield, Redditch.

This June, 2020-born bull is another by the same sire and out of the ‘best family there ever was at Blelack’, Blelack Evora.

The only other five-figure price was 10,500gns paid to the trustees of the late Gordon R Brooke, Upper Huntlywood Earlston, which is managed by John Elliot.

This was for the April, 2020-born bull, Gordon Eton, which was sired by Rawburn Joe Eric – which has bred bulls to 25,000gns – and out of Linton Gilbertines Ella. The highest index bull ever to be sold from this herd, he found a new home with David Lindsay, Baldovie, Kingoldrum, by Kirriemuir, Angus.

Making 8000gns was the reserve intermediate champion, Cairnton Emperor, from Ken and Margaret Howie and daughter, Nichola, Lumphanan, Banchory.

This 19-month-old bull was inside his dam, Fordel Empress, when purchased at the Fordel dispersal and was sired by Cheerbrook Luther. Having previously stood second at the Royal Highland Showcase and first in his class at Westmorland Show, he found a new home with Robin Lamb, Limetree Farm, Richhill, Co Armagh.

Kingholm Result realised 7800gns for Matthew and Heather Currie, Skewbridge, Mouswald, Dumfries. Their similarly-aged bull is out of the first crop bred by Ribble Egma, out of the heifer, Kingholm Rosebud, which goes back to Rawburn Boss Hogg. A MacGillivray, Beauly, Inverness, forked out the cash.

Another from the same home secured 6000gns when the Scottish Government, Knocknagael, Inverness, purchased Kingholm Pickup. This April, 2020-born bull is a Weeton Rocky son, which was bought in as a calf along with Ribble Petal Maid, from the Ribble dispersal.

Harestone Dominator made his mark for June Barclay, South Road, Insch, when realising 7500gns to James Innes, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Judged as the senior champion, this February, 2020-born bull is a Shadwell Earl son and out Liley Duchess, which was bought at that herd’s dispersal two years ago.

Richard and Carol Rettie, Craigend, Methven, Perth, were also in the money when selling Retties Prophet for the same money.

Their April, 2020-born bull stood yearling champion at the national breed show staged at Westmorland Show this year, and now heads to Orkney for work with Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness, Stromness. He is by the 10,000gns Gretnahouse Blackpot, out of Retties Pam, which goes back to Billinge Magic Jack Eric.

Idvies Paragon achieved 7200gns for Alistair and Graham Fraser, Newton of Idvies, Forfar. This 18-month-old bull is by Thrunton Panther, which was bought here for 15,000gns and out of the Shadwell Black Broughton daughter, Idvies Parba. He now heads home with Colin McMillan, Tallant, Islay.

The same home produced another similarly-aged bull, Idvies Paradise, which made 6000gns when selling to Willie Brown, Laigh Drumdow, Turnberry, Girvan. This one is backed by home-bred genetics, being the result of the Idvies Pink Peugeot sire onto Idvies Parba.

Idvies Premier also made his mark for this home when achieving 5500gns to GM Mitchell, Hilton of Carslogie, Cupar, Fife. He is a son of Idvies Ferrari, out of Idvies Privoda, which goes back to Instack Ely.

Not far behind, on 7000gns, was the best from Charles and Elizabeth McCombie, and sons, Ben and Charles, Auchincrieve, Rothiemay, who now run 120 cows.

This March, 2020-born bull was sired by Rodmead Primero, which has bred bulls to 13,000gns previously and out of a bought in heifer, Cairnton Karisma. He is another to head to Orkney, this one with the Rendalls at Holland Farm, Papa Westray.

The reserve senior champion, Rosemead January, made his mark for Angus Stovold, Lydling, Shackleford, Godalming, when selling for 6500gns to Ballindalloch Home Farms, Ballindalloch, Banffshire.

This January, 2020-born bull is a son of Lockerley Black Boromir, out of Rosemead Jessica, which is one of the foundation families in the 150-cow herd.

The junior breed champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, Carruthers Goldsmith, achieved a 6500gns price tag for Donald and Kerry Graham and sons, Jack and Joe, Birsca, Corrie, Lockerbie. This 18-month-old bull was the last son available for sale from Morven Kilo Master, and out of Carruthers Georgie, which is backed by Rawburn Enigma. JH Strawhorn, Dalmakethar, Lockerbie, was the final bidder for this boy.

Peter and Jonathan Chapman, South Redbog, Strichen, Fraserburgh, went to 6000gns for Ettrick Batman, from Gordon Gray, Sunnycroft, Lindean, Selkirk. This March, 2020-born bull is sired by the 17,000gns Linton Gilbertines President and out of Ettrick Belle, which was the grand-dam of the 10,000gns Ettrick Batman sold last year.

Next best, at 5200gns, was JAC Papa Bear from Alison Cuthbertson and son, James, Wester Balgair, Balfron.

Now running 90 cows in their relatively new herd, this March, 2020-born bull is by the home-bred bull, JAC Titan and out of Gordonhall Proud Beth, which was bought in along with the entire Gordonhall herd four years ago to increase numbers.

Papa Bear found a new home with Willie Shaw, at West Lethans, Saline, Dunfermline.

The draft sale of females topped at 3500gns for Mosshall Red Skye from G and N Taylor, Parkview, Blackburn. This March 2020 born heifer is a daughter of ML Red Loaded and out of Mosshall Red Skye.
