Bullocks and heifers averaged £1109.23 and £1084.58 respectively at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly store cattle sale, with prices soaring to £1690 and £1680 for a Charolais heifer and a Limousin bullock from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.

Weaned cattle achieved £1270 for a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Staff, Longrow, Canonbie, with steers realising £1210 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Caddy, The Crescent, Egremont. Heifers topped at £1000 for a Fleckvieh cross from Newhouse Farms, Holywood, Dumfries.

The weekly sale of 325 calves sold to a top of £640 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Dickinsion, Brockwoodlees, whilst British Blues topped the heifers at £430 from Messrs Wood, Groundy Croft.

The firm also sold 123 cows and heifers with calves at foot, to a top of £2800 for Limousins from Kexborough Farms, Town Farm.

On Monday store lambs averaged £94.83 and sold to £130 on two occasions firstly for Beltex from Messrs Bewley, Mid Farm, Whitrigg, Wigton, and again for Texel cross lambs from Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite Hall, Ivegill.

A strong show of 544 breeding cattle were forward for Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale, where a top price of £3200 was paid for a British Blue cross in-calf heifer from Braes of Enzie, Buckie.

Bullocks led the way at United Auctions' weekly sale of 972 store cattle, when selling to a top of 277.50p per kg for a 209kg Charolais cross from Gateside, and to £1595 for a 662kg Limousin cross from East Bankock.

Bullocks (452) averaged 223.56p, whilst heifers (458) cashed in at 215.41p and sold to 261.50p for a 195kg Charolais cross from Glenside, and to £1405 for a 708kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Grange of Aberbothrie.

Young bulls (8) balanced out at 206.66p topping at 218.40p for a Simmental cross from Muircot, and to £1380 for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from Mosshall.

The firm also sold sold 8155 store, feeding and breeding sheep, along with 151 rams and ram lambs.

Averages improved in all sections among the store lambs, with Beltex crosses cashing in at £105.43 (+£8.48 on the week), whilst Suffolk crosses hit £96.18 (+£9.80). Texel crosses and Mules balanced out at £93.93 (+£4.73) and £97.23 (+£11.46) respectively. Cheviot Mules levelled at £98.50 (+£9.57), whilst Cheviot and Blackfaces averaged £71.82 (+£0.32) and £69.24 (+£2.63).

Store lambs sold to £121 for Texels from Ristol and Ballikinrain, whilst Mule gimmers from the Dyke achieved £150.

A Limousin steer from AR Hardy, Eastlands, Workington, secured the top call of £1415 at Mitchells Auction Marts' store cattle sale when realising £1535.

Heifers topped at £1385 for more of the same from W and PA Walton, Low Kinmont, Corney.

The second sale of suckled calves witnessed a top call of £1095 on two occasions, firstly for a Limousin steer from ID Clemetson, Lucy Close, Workington, and again for a Charolais steer from GW and PA Scott, Crooklands, Dearham.

Heifers sold to £945 for a Blonde from E Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet.

Store lamb trade followed a buoyant demand, when selling to £126 for Texel lambs from A Ashburner, Summerhill, Whitehaven. Beltex lambs realised £120 for WH and F Wood, Well Head, Dean.

On Tuesday, 425 store cattle and 109 suckled calves came under the hammer, where store bullocks and heifers averaged 223.18p per kg and 202.14p respectively.

Bullocks topped at £1350 on two occasions, firstly for a 676kg Aberdeen-Angus from Westertoun, and again for a 583kg Charolais from Darnhall Mains.

Heifers peaked at £1490 for a 584kg Limousin from Feoch, and to 261.9p for a 420kg Charolais from Hazelside.

Among the 109 suckled calves trade topped at £840 for 342kg Charolais bullocks from Lawriesmuir, and to 293p for 219kg Simmentals from Auchrobert, to average 230.4p.

Heifer calves realised £740 for three 358kg Charolais from Yondercroft, and to 248.6p for Simmentals again from Auchrobert, to level at 215.2p.
