Prices peaked 8000gns at a society show and sale of pedigree Charolais at Welshpool where bulls met a a 65% clearance.

Securing that lead bid was the 18-month-old Montgomery Regal from Messrs Roberts and Jones of Llangadfan, Powys. A son of the easy-calving Gretnahouse Jugular, a bull that stood supreme champion at Carlisle in 2016, he is out of Montgomery Moli, a Balmyle Harlequin daughter. Regal was knocked down to J Jones and Co of Bala, Gwynedd.

The same consignors also took 7000gns for Montgomery Patagonia, a 22-month-old by the same sire bred from another Harlequin-sired cow, in the shape of Montgomery Manon. Patagonia caught the eye of RA Evans, who will be taking him home to Dolgellau, Gwynedd.

Second top price was 7500gns paid for Hendy Rambo from JAW Rees of Llanidloes, Powys. He is by Blelack Digger and out Hendy Marvel, a daughter of Hendy Ivanhoe. Rambo sold back to Llanidloes, Powys, to DA Davies and Son.

The reserve overall champion, Sportsmans Roman, from Charlie Boden, Stockport, made 6500gns when selling to RJB Tucker, buying for his herd in Gower, Swansea. The breeding behind this fella includes the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman, onto Sportsmans Lizzy, a daughter of the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny.

Four bulls came under the hammer for 6000gns to include Esgob Rog from GM Jones, Bala, Gwynedd. This 21-month-old by the 12,000gns Caylers Hustler, headed home to Blackmill, Bridgend, with WL Williams and Partner.

Another from the same home and by the same sire, Esgob Rio matched that bid when selling to G Jerman, Newtown, Powys.

Selling for the same money was the 19-month-old Dooley Rocko from Derbyshire breeder, D Thornley Swadlincote. Rocko is by the old AI sire, Moncur General and sold to J Brown, Minehead, Somerset.

The final bull to sell for 6000gns was Waldencourt Redwood, a 16-month-old son of the 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini, from Waldencourt Charolais, Newent, Gloucestershire. Redwood was knocked down to PA Cleave of Newton Abbot, Devon.
