Oxfordshire breeders, Richard Hassell and Rachel Wyllie of Brailes Livestock are never far away from the top tickets and last Saturday was no exception, when they produced both the senior and junior champion-winning cattle.

Brought out by Richard and Carol Rettie, Methven, the senior female victor and overall champion came in the form of the July 2020-born heifer, Burradon Raquel, which was purchased privately in August of this year from Chris Curry, Low Burradon, Thropton.

On her first outing and having also claimed the continental senior reserve honours, Raquel is a daughter of Clenagh Lyle, out of Burradon Grace and will be heading to the Scottish National Winter Fair, held at Lanark on November 27.

Raquel's stablemate, Brailes Samson, was awarded the junior male championship before going on to stand as junior champion for his first time in the show ring. A son of Westcarse Houdini – which sired the herd's run of bulls that sold to average 12,000gns at the breed's May sale, held at Borderway Marts, Carlisle – this January-born bull is bred out of Bassett Orange, purchased privately in-calf from Jean Atkinson, Malton, North Yorkshire and will be heading to the breed sale at Carlisle, in May 2022.

Lyndsay Nelson, from Mains of Lundie, Brechin, took home the reserve overall senior title after being tapped out with her heifer, Edzell Rose. On her first outing, this December 2020-born daughter of Gretnahouse Ming is out of Westcarse Orchid – which was purchased in-calf at the end of last year.

The junior female champion, Silvermere Solitaire, from Michelle Hanson and Darren Irvine's Forgie-based herd, in Aberdeenshire scooped the reserve junior overall title. On her first outing, this AI daughter of Allanfauld Neptune – bred by Archie and John MacGregor, Kilsyth – is out of the home-bred Silvermere Mahjong, which is bred from a previous champion of the 2013 National Show, held in Birmingham.
