Shorthorn breeders were out in force on Saturday, with the show witnessing one of the best entries for the breed to date.

It was certainly a day to remember for Duncan Welsh when he stood victorious in the senior championship, whilst the Ribbleview herd came up trumps in the junior classes.

On his first outing and scooping the senior male championship, overall senior honours and the native senior reserve rosette was the July, 2020-born bull from Duncan Welsh's 40-cow Fenwick-based herd, in the form of Westbroad Paddy.

Brought out with the help of Natalie and Marion Hynd, and Ian Johnstone, this boy is a son of the 12,000gns Shawhill Leroy – which was purchased at the 2018 October Bull Sales after standing champion, as well as securing breed champion at the 2017 Borderway Agri Expo. Paddy is out of the home-bred classified Ex cow, Westbroad Abbie, and will be forward for sale at the Stirling Bull Sales, next year.

Taking the reserve rosette among the seniors was the all-white Runleymill Roxburgh Lass Pam, from John Wilson and Janet Dunning, Settle, North Yorkshire. On only her second outing, this September, 2020-born heifer calf is by Chapelton Dauphin, out of the home-bred, Runleymill Roxburgh Lass and stood breed champion at the recent Borderway Agri Expo.

Keeping it in the family, Josh Wilson also enjoyed success when his pen leader, Ribbleview Rita Janet, took home the red, white and blue sash for junior champion on his heifer's first outing. With her dam, Mineshop Janet, having been privately purchased in-calf from Chris Nye, Norfolk, this February-born heifer is a daughter of Crooked Post Tobias.

Millie Hendy's heifer, Highsky Erins Enchantment, was tapped out as reserve junior female and reserve overall champion. Sired by Carrarock Chalkie – which is responsible for breeding the 2019 Royal Highland Show champion – this February-born girl is bred out of Caramba Erins Kiss.
