A fresh heifer from the Ortongrange Autumn Opportunity sale topped the Pedigree Dairy Day event at Carlisle, when selling for 2700gns.

The sale, which incorporated the November Border and Lakeland Holstein event, was led by Richard Martin's Ortongrange Brennan Ghost, a Welcome-Tel Brennan daughter bred from the Ex91-2E SP LP50 cow, Ortongrange Design Ghost. Bred from 10 generations of Excellent or Very Goods, with her fourth dam being Ridgefield Storm Ghost that was grand champion at a the Royal Show, she sold to John and James Graham, Blairdrummond, Stirling.

The same buyers also went to 2550gns for CJ and VM Gillespie's Ploughlands Victor Jill, another fresh heifer from High Ploughlands, Kirkbampton. A daughter of Legend-Maker Victor, she is bred from the Ex90 SP Ploughlands Pure Jill.

Two lots sold for 2600gns with the first being Jane Steel's Lomond Solomon RL Ashlyn VG87, a fresh second calver by Walnutlawn Solomon, from Kepculloch, Balfron. Bred from seven generations of VG or Ex dams, she is out of the Ex92 Lomond RL Atwood Ashlyn ET and was knocked down to Messrs Kinloch, Dumbarton.

Matching that price was Skirwith Hall Farms' Stowbeck Lucas Ester, from Penrith. This two-year-old calved heifer by Stowbeck Lucas and out of a home-bred cow headed home with Messrs Forsyth, Newton Stewart.

The same home also sold Stowbeck Ranger Connie, another two-year-old calved heifer that made 2450gns selling to Messrs Forshaw and Sons, Alston, Longridge, Preston. Her sire is Double W Ranger with her dam being a home-bred cow by Netherside Equinox.

The Wright family's Berryholme Holstein herd from Kendal, took 2500gns for Berryholme Goodwhone Yvonne. Messrs Bulmers, Stranraer forked out the cash for this entry which goes back to the Ex94 Pine-Tree Sid daughter that was grand champion at the Northern Expo Show in 2016.

Judge Colin Mair, Townhead, Dumfries, found his champion in Espland Zelgadis Rhapsody, which was being sold as part of the Espland dispersal sale from the Cannon family, Appleby. She sold for 2400gns to Stu Forshaw near Preston, who also went to the same money for Espland Lighthouse Amy. Espland sold 12 cows and heifers to average £1952.

The reserve was the senior heifer, Stowbeck Fitz Dewdrop which also made 2400gns Messrs Bulmers near Stranraer.

Yearling heifers sold to 2000gns for Mr Martin's Ortongrange Denver Allie, purchased by Stuart Leitch from Ayrshire. She is bred from the All Ireland winner Ortongrange Doorman Arangatang VG89 that sold for 5000gns as a young calf in the Black & White Sale in 2016.
