A five-year-old cow and one of the last lots sold attracted the top price of 9500gns at the HW Angus 10th Anniversary Matron sale, from Burnside of Balhaldie, Dunblane.

The sale, staged at Carlisle following the Angus Fever sale, saw HW Blackbird S182, a daughter of Netherton Australian, top the sale, when selling over the telephone, to John James, buying for his pedigree herd from Llandovery, Carmarthenshire. Bred from the SAV Solid Gold-sired cow, HW Black Gold P394, she sold with June-born bull calf, HW Black Bentley, a HW Evander son at foot.

John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso, went to 8000gns for the four-year-old cow, HW Karama T532 (ET). The result of a flush from the Netherton Big Edition cow, Netherton Karama K574, and sired by Rawburn Boss, this big cow is a maternal sister to several herd sires to include Netherton Kracker, Kommander and Kelso. She also sold due to HW Abacus.

Two lots realised 7000gns with the first being HW Annie R488, a six-year-old by Netherton Freedom bred from a previous home-bred Annie by TC Grid Topper. The No 1 cow in the breed with embryos having been sold to many countries and her first son, HW Adonnis selling to NCBC stud in Ireland, she was knocked down to Norbreck Genetics, Cockermouth, Lancaster, to capitalise further on her breeding potential.

Gavin Tait of the Raethorn herd from Thorneydykes, Westruther, bought the second 7000gns lot, HW Madame Pride S632 (ET), a five-year-old cow by the $285,000 SAV Harvestor. Voted Miss Europe and then second in the World in an Angus Breeders' Competition, she is bred from the SAV Madame Pride and has produced numerous embryos that have been sold to several countries. She sold in calf to Rawburn Bannockburn.

James Playfair Hannay of Playfair Farms, Kelso, also got in on the act, forking out 5800gns for HW Gammer Eulanne T452, a four-year-old by Fordel Minnesoata Prime bred from the SAV Solid Gold daughter, Mohmar Gammer Eulanne. Included in this transaction was her June-born bull calf, HW Gumbo, by HW Evander. Eulanne also sold served again to Evander.

HW Duchess of Windsor S211, another four-year-old with bull calf at foot by Evander and served again to the same sire, made 5000gns when heading down to Banbury, Oxon, with Messrs Jefferies. Duchess of Windsor is by Rawburn Boss and out of the Rawburn Elmer-sired cow, Rawburn Duchess of Windsor.

Three sold for 4200gns, with Jim Logan, Pirntaton, adding to his previous purchases at the Angus Fever sale, when buying the six-year-old cow, HW Annie R538 (ET) which goes back to the same imported ET female from the Southland herd, as the 7000gns Annie sold earlier. A daughter of Netherton Mr Rader, she changed hands due to HW Abacus.

Minutes earlier, Richard Nicholson, Brandesburton, Driffield, went to the same money for HW Ellen Erica R620, a similarly aged cow by Rawburn Boss out of Rawburn Ellen Erica. She sold with July-born heifer calf by HW Evander and due again to the same sire.

Her four-year-old maternal sister, HW Ellen Erica T512, by Fordel Minnesota, also made 4200gns when selling with June-born bull calf at foot by Evander and back in calf to the same sire. Final bidders were Gordon and David Gray, buying for their Ettrick herd from Selkirk.
