A Limousin cross steer from the Critchley family, Hutton, topped Skipton Auction Mart’s 14th annual Christmas primestock show and sale.

Their 525kg supreme was purchased from local breeder, Chris Akrigg, of Cray, and later sold for £3252 to David Green of K and J Green Butchers.

The same home was also awarded the reserve with their un-haltered 600kg British Blue cross steer, which sold for £1977 to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.

Meanwhile, the unhaltered champion, a 530kg British Blue cross steer from the Jowett family in Queensbury, made £1958 to Knavesmire Butchers in York.

Beltex from Calderdale’s John Midgley, who owns the Upper Calder Valley flock in Luddendenfoot, again landed the top honours amongst the sheep, this time with a trio of 41kg lambs. Sired by an Ainstable tup, they were bought by Cropper Family Butchers and Deli in Accrington, for £500 per head.

The same buyers also went to £400 for eight-year-old winning young handler, Charlie Leach's single 46kg Beltex from Hebden Bridge. It was purchased from Anthony Thompson in Foulridge.

Keeping it in the family, Adrian Leach was runner-up with three 44kg Beltex cross lambs, which sold for £210.

Untrimmed champion and lowland reserve champions were Mike Allen's three 43kg pure Beltex crosses from Staithes, which made £240 per head, while the reserve untrimmed, 45kg Beltex from Ellis Bros, of Addingham Moorside, made £205 per head.

Hill champion winners were three 51kg Hexham-type Blackface lambs from the Hutchinson family from Faceby, which realised £148 per head, while the reserve, North of England Mules made £140 for Mick Collinson, of Clayton-le-Dale, Blackburn.

The 199 butchers lambs forward balanced out at 348p, with Leyburn’s Martin and Val Brown landing the supreme with a 24.8kg deadweight Beltex ewe lamb, which had a killing out percentage 60.4% and AHDB grading of E3L. It sold for £520.

The same home produced the reserve with another Beltex which scaled 22.9kg, killed out at 60.2% and made £310.

First-time exhibitor Adam Bamforth, of Slaithwaite, won the champion pen of three prime porkers, with three 93kg gilts by a pedigree Pietrain boar, out of pure Large White sows. They sold for 210p per kg to W Taylor and Son Butchers, of Bamber Bridge, who also paid £106.65 for the reserve champion trio – a 78kg pure Pietrains from Daniel Thackray, of Fewston.
