Neil and Stuart Barclay of Harestone, Insch, had a whopping day at Stirling Bull Sales when securing 24,000gns to top the Charolais trade.

Not only was it a great day for the Harestone team, it was an outstanding sale for the breed creating a new record average for Stirling Bull Sales for any breed, when 101 bulls cashed in at £8449.00 plus £1328 on the year with an impressive 86% clearance rate.

The sale leader came in the form of the 18-month-old bull, Harestone Ronaldinho, which was knocked down in a two way split to Major Walter, Balthayock, Perth, and Grant and Mark Smeaton, Cotton of Ovenstone, Kirkbuddo, Forfar. This boy is the first crop of calves from the 23,000gns Goldies Oasis and is a heifer’s calf with the dam, Harestone Nigella going back to Hermes semen.

After Goldies breeding backing the top price, it was also a field day for Hamish Goldie, Dumfries, when he himself achieved 21,000gns for Goldies Rocky. This July 2020 born bull is a son of Gretnahouse Heman, which has previously bred bulls to 24,000gns and 23,000gns, whilst the dam, Goldies Dignity, is sired by Dingle Hofmeister. Jock Wilson, Kinclune, Glenkindie, Alford, was the final bidder.

Three bulls then made 20,000gns, the first bull to hit the 20,000gns price tag was the reserve overall champion, Westcarse Ruler from Catherine MacGregor, Insch. This April 2020 born bull was bought at the Westcarse dispersal with his dam for 13,000gns as the start of the Moss herd for Catherine and Stuart’s children, Cameron, Jessica, Elizah and Neil. A Nuthampstead Judas son, out of Westcarse Milly, this boy found a new home in Lanarkshire with Colin and Fiona Wight, Carwood, Biggar.

On the same money was Silver Rebel from Ben Harman, Grove, Chesham, which travels to the borders with John Jefferey, Kersknowe, Kelso. This 19-month-old bull is by the easy calving bull, Balthayock Musketeer, which has improved every cow in Ben’s herd, whilst the dam, Silver Leia, goes back to the Stirling purchase, Thrunton Fairfax.

Chesham Rocky from the same home also hit 20,000gns when receiving a final bid from Smallburn Farms, Mayne, Elgin, Morayshire. This October 2020 born bull is the first crop of calves from the home-bred sire, Silver Oakman and out of the Barnsford Jubilant daughter, Chesham Navajo.
